Kwara State Government and former governor AbdulFatah Ahmed are trading words over the failed portion of the N3.7 billion diamond split underpass.

The underpass, located on Geri-Alimi-Airport Road axis of Ilorin, was inaugurated in April 2019 by the then outgoing Ahmed administration.

The contracting firm was Duravil Construction Ltd.

But recently, a portion of the underpass failed due to perhaps, alleged poor contract execution.

This has forced the government to issue a threat order of recall to site to the consultant and the contractor of the project.

Speaking with reporters during an-on-the-spot-assessment of the portion, Works and Transport Commissioner Rotimi Ilyasu said the government would also explore what it could to get back from those concerned.

The media aide to the former governor, Wahab Oba, accused the AbdulRazaq administration of lacking in maintenance culture.

He said: “The 2nd phase of the project and a maintenance contract were awarded to the same company at about N400million and N1.5m monthly. The maintenance contract covers May 2019 to May 2021, for first phase. It is meant to maintain the stormy underground drainage to forestall silting or blockages and its attendant damage to the underpass road. It also includes maintenance of security equipment in the control room, carrying out surveillance work, maintenance of street lights, transformer, lawns and fuelling of the generator.

“Unfortunately, Governor AbdulRazaq abruptly stopped the maintenance contract in June 2019 without providing any alternative for the first of its kind edifice.”
