Labourers ‘kill’ colleague for stealing handset

An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court has ordered two labourers, Ayuba Abu, 32 and Dogo Yakubu, 30, to be remanded in prison custody for allegedly killing their colleague, Mamudu Amidu, 34.

The defendants were said to have  conspired with others at large to beat Amidu to death.

It was said Abu reported to Dogo that Amidu stole his handset and they planned to beat him but Amidu pleaded and he was pardoned.

Thereafter, a neighbour (now at large), who heard about the matter, insisted that Amidu be punished for the offence.

The defendants and the neighbour beat Amidu to coma on Plot 10, Prime Adesoji Ajose Street, Ogudu GRA Phase 11, Ogudu.

It was gathered that the defendants also tortured Amidu before he lost consciousness. The defendants drenched Amidu in muddy water while beating him.

Amidu was found dead around 3am on July 9 in the water.

The defendant’s plea was not taken.

Prosecuting Sergeant Jimah Iseghede filed an application that the defendants be remanded in prison custody pending legal advice from Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Magistrate B.O. Ope-Agbe ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison custody pending legal advice.

Ope-Agbe adjourned the matter till September 13.
