Lagos State government has said it is training swimming pool operators, hotel owners and life guards to prevent drowning.
The Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, made this known during a one-day sensitisation programme for stakeholders in Alausa, Ikeja.
He said the government would train lifeguards and swimming pool operators on how to reduce swimming fatalities.
“We are taking this opportunity to dissect the recent swimming pool safety regulation passed by the House of Assembly that prescribes and documents in detail, practices concerning swimming pool operations. We want to reduce fatalities due to drowning in our state.”
The Founder of Strap and Safe Child Foundation, Mrs. Bolanle Edwards, listed causes of drowning to include absence of pool barriers and non-supervision.
The Chief Executive Officer of Occupational Health and Safety Management, Mr. Ehi Iden, said: “Swimming pool operators should ensure that every part of the pool is marked to indicate its depth. There’s is also need to look out for pool drain, as this can trap women’s hair or do bodily damage to children.”
