The Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), Sanai Bolanle Agunbiade during the week, empowered some of his constituents with buses, sewing machines and other tools in furtherance of his poverty alleviation programme. The lawmaker said it would not be the first time he is embarking on such empowerment. Other items shared at the programme include POS machines.
The distribution of mini-buses was the second edition of a support programme by the lawmaker in partnership with the Lagos State Empowerment Trust Fund (LSETF). Agunbiade, who represents Ikorodu Constituency 1 in the assembly, said the empowerment was to enable the beneficiaries get involved in the transport sector with ease. “It is for them to know how to do business and also to be part of entrepreneurship that is being preached by the state government. We arranged and partnered with the LSTF to create the opportunity for our people. We provided some counterpart fund and took care of the interest and other risks,” he said.
He added that the beneficiaries were carefully chosen across the constituency. He added that the items were given to those who genuinely needed economic empowerment, not just members of the party. He encouraged the good use of the empowerment tools by the beneficiaries. Speaking during the programme, Mrs. Omolara Adewunmi, LSTEF’s Director of Programme, commended the lawmaker for listening to his constituents and providing help for them. She said that the tools would reduce the massive unemployment facing youths in Ikorodu and across the country.
Many of the beneficiaries appreciated the gesture of the lawmaker, describing him as a performing representative of the people while promising to make the best use of the tools given them. Political and community leaders present at the occasion also attested to the goodness of Agunbiade as a representative of the people, urging him to continue to use political office to touch the lives of the people by bringing dividends of democracy to his constituents.
