ANGERED by the delay in completing their programme within the stipulated academic year, students from the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) yesterday took their case to the office of Governor Akinwumi Ambode.
The protesters, led by the Lagos State University (LASU) Association of Dental Students Chairman, Mr. Sydon Agbor, lamented that the students had spent eight years as against the stipulated six years, due to the non-accreditation of one of the programme – Medical and Dental – by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
According to Agbor, a 600 level student, the programme is paramount, adding that without its accreditation by the regulatory body, the final year students would not graduate.
‘’We are here to let the governor know the plight of the students in our institution; our future is at stake here. Some of us have spent eight years and yet there is no guarantee for our graduation without the accreditation of the programme”, he said.
He appealed to the governor to assist with funds that would enable the school acquire some basic infrastructures, hire lecturers, build laboratories as well as facilities that must be available to train student.
His words: “We have been in this journey since 2008; normally the course should be six years programme but since then, till date, almost eight years, no improvement.”
He called on the government to ensure that the school authority judiciously apply the funds allocated to it.
‘’We want the governor to use his influence to boycott all protocol and ensure that the money go to the right destination.”
