Son of the late ex-Kwara State governor Mohammed Lawal, Hakeem, has won the rescheduled Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship primary election.
Last week, he became the governorship candidate of the party through a collegiate system.
Dissatisfied with the result, one of the aspirants, Prof. Shuaib AbdulRaheem, petitioned the national headquarters of the SDP in Abuja and it ordered a fresh direct primary to be held on Monday this week.
Hakeem won by 606 votes to beat Abdulraheem, his only opponent, who polled 177 votes. Eight votes were voided.
The SDP governorship primaries, witnessed by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials, had four delegates each from 193 wards, making a total of 772 delegates alongside some members of the state exco of the party.
At last Wednesday’s governorship primary, Hakeem trounced the former vice chancellor of University of Ilorin, Sunday Babalola, Alhaji Tajudeen Audu Lafiaji, Alhaji Khaleel Bolaji and Alhaji Kale Belgore.
In the contest, Alhaji Lawal polled 33 votes out of 63 votes at the exercise conducted at Atlantic Event Centre, Ilorin.
Prof Abdulraheem polled 16 votes, Alhaji Bolaji got no vote, Alhaji Belgore got no vote, Babalola, an engineer, got two votes, while Alhaji Lafiaji polled 10 votes.
