Large turnout amidst widespread vote-buying 9:29pm
By Adekunle Yusuf
The governorship poll in both Ìkìrun (Ifelodun LGA) and Okuku (Odo Otin LGA) was largely peaceful. The turnout was also impressive. In terms of materials delivery and electoral officials performance, INEC put up a commendable show as BVAs didn’t disappoint in most polling units monitored.
While performing his civic duty, former governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola said he is confident that the people,’s will will prevail at the end of the voting exercise. He was however quick to add that his PDP remains the people’s preference in Osun State. According to him, the “PDP has done well for Osun in the past and this is the time for the people to reward the party after having an experience of another party. When people are about to forget past good deeds, you remind them by boasting about the great past times.”
However, vote buying was an issue in all polling units monitored. Officials and representatives of both the ruling APC and PDP were seeing openly wooing voters with cash. In many polling units, it was not different to see people negotiating for financial benefits before they could cast their votes. While APC was alleged to be paying N5K per vote, the price ranged in some areas for the PDP, which was paying between N5k, N3k and N2k per vote.
Madam Niniola said in ward 1 unit 4 she and her friends were in the polling unit because of the money promised by some party agents, adding that “it would be unnecessary to waste time coming out to vote without the benefits attached.”
