Makinde mourns victims of Ibadan accident, says death toll rises to 15

The death toll from Tuesday’s tragic accident at the Soka area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has reportedly risen to between 10 and 15, a sharp increase from the initial five confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde gave the updated figure on Wednesday during the lying-in-state and executive session held in honour of former Governor Omololu Olunloyo.

Governor Makinde described the incident as a monumental loss and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He also called for a minute of silence in their honour.

The Nation reports that the Soka axis of the highway was thrown into mourning after a multiple-vehicle crash involving seven vehicles, including two Nissan Micra taxis, two trucks, a tanker, and two Toyota Camry cars.

Eyewitnesses said the crash occurred when a trailer attempting to reverse onto the expressway was hit by an oncoming truck, triggering a chain reaction.
