Makinde to proceed on one-month leave as Oyo Assembly affirms Lawal as acting governor

The Oyo State House of Assembly has acknowledged a letter from Governor Seyi Makinde notifying lawmakers of his plan to proceed on a one-month leave from Thursday, August 29, 2025, to Monday, September 29.

The letter, read during Tuesday’s plenary session presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin complied with Section 190 (1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which requires governors to formally inform the legislature before proceeding on leave.

Governor Makinde stated that Deputy Governor Barrister Bayo Lawal would assume duties as Acting Governor throughout the period.

“I hereby transmit that during the period indicated above, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, shall serve as Acting Governor. I shall resume duty upon my return from vacation on Monday, 29th September 2025,” the letter partly read.

Speaker Ogundoyin assured the Assembly’s support for a smooth transition and reaffirmed the House’s commitment to constitutional order and governance continuity.

Barrister Bayo Lawal is expected to take full charge of the governor’s duties from August 29 until Makinde’s return on September 29.

The Assembly will reconvene for plenary on September 16, 2025.
