A 27-year-old man, Tope Akande, was on Thursday sentenced to four months imprisonment by the Ibadan North Grace C Customary Court for stealing a bag worth N2,000.
Akande, who was arraigned on two-count charge of theft, was however given an option of N4,000 fine.
Police prosecutor, Sgt. Kroseide Obehi from Sango Division, told the court that the accused was arrested after he committed the offence at The Polytechnic Ibadan on May 7.
The charge sheet signed by ASP Falade Olatundun, Divisional Crime Officer of Sango Division, reads: “That you Tope Akande ” m” on the 7th day of May 2018 at Polytechnic Ibadan in the jurisdiction of Grade “C” Customary Court sitting at Gbaremu Ijokodo Ibadan did entered into Polytechnic Ibadan with intent to commit felony to wit stealing and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 509 of the criminal code cap 38 vol.11 laws of Oyo state of Nigeria 2000.
“That you Tope Akande ” m” on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned Grade “C” Customary Court did steal a student bag value N2,000 property of one Akindoyin Damilola committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 390 (9) cap 38 vol.11 laws of Oyo state of Nigeria 2000.”
Akande, who later pleaded guilty to the offence, urged the court to have mercy on him.
He said “I want to plead for mercy. I will not do it again.”
President of the court, Mr. Edward Fadugba, after listening to the parties involved sentenced the accused to a four months imprisonment or an option of N4,000 fine.
Fadugba said “This court having realized that you are guilty has sentenced you to four months imprisonment or an option of N4,000 fine.”
