Mob yesterday swooped on two suspected motorcycle thieves and set them ablaze at Popo Bridge, Oke-Ado area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
An eyewitness, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on condition of anonymity, said the suspects were apprehended after snatching a motorcycle from the owner.
The witness said the suspects, who ran under the bridge after attacking the owner of the motorcycle with a cutlass, were given a hot chase by the mob, which later apprehended them.
“We heard the voice of someone shouting for help and when we rushed out to see what was happening, we saw him bleeding from his neck.”
motorcycle was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the suspects were apprehended by the mob and set ablaze.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the incident.
Osifeso said investigation was ongoing and that update on the matter would be provided in due course.
Meanwhile, an Iyaganku Chief Magistrate’s Court, Ibadan, has remanded seven men at the Agodi correctional facility over the murder of a police officer.
They are Sarafa Lateef, 30, Saminu Ibrahim, 28, Oloso Sikiru, 36, Fatai Yusuf, 45, Moruf Olanrewaju, 42, Isiaka Rafiu, 40, and Anuoluwa Akinola, 32.
They were arraigned for conspiracy and murder.
The prosecutor, ASP Amos Adewale, earlier told court that the defendants conspired on April 25 somewhere on Iseyin Road, Moniya, Ibadan, and caused the death of one Inspector Augustine Okoro, 43.
He added that the accused beat and stoned Okoro to death while he was conducting stop-and-search routine duty in the area.
The offence, he said, contravened the Criminal Code of Oyo State, 2000.
Presiding Chief Magistrate E. A. Idowu, who did not take the plea of the accused for want of jurisdiction, ordered their remand at the Agodi correctional facility.
Idowu referred the case file to the Directorate of Public Prosecution for advice and adjourned the matter till July 10, for mention.
