When the song “Wanted” by Mulla Rae dropped in 2021 the music industry and lovers of music welcomed it with an embrace.
It had all the trapping of a great song that would rule the airwaves for a long time.
Naijaloaded described it as a “fast-paced love song beautifully delivered with beautiful, sensual, smooth vocals and excellent instrumentals”.
It was a song that stuck with the artist, his fans and indeed with the music industry which is waking up to the fact that a new Afrobeat sensation is born.
For Mulla Rae, the song gives him fond memories and he has described it as something special to him.
“That’s my first baby you are asking about. Although I have recorded a couple of demos in the past, the first official single I released as an artiste is “Wanted,” he declared.
“I was ecstatic about the reception that “Wanted” received. Not that I didn’t know that the song was a great one but it felt good hearing it from others.
“It’s one thing for your producer and close friends to tell you that your single bangs, it’s another thing for you to receive DMs on social media and calls from strangers telling you that they love your song and it has become their favourite jam.
“For a song that was made within hours in my home studio to a song that has recorded thousands of streams from across the world, “Wanted” is special to me.
“The idea for the single came while I was working out with my friends – observing my routine early morning jog in my estate.
“Like I usually do, I recorded the song idea as a voice note immediately and when I got home, I fleshed it out in my music notepad.
“However, I had to remove and add one or two lyrics during the recording session with my friend,” he explained, going down memory as to the process that led to the recording of the single.”
Every music artist has their unique ways of getting inspiration and Mulla Rae is no exception even though he accepts there is no religion or fetish to it.
“To be honest, I don’t have a defined time or place or mood where I get inspired to create music. It can come at any time and I would go with the flow.
“Nevertheless, I have noticed that inspiration tends to come when I’m working out or taking a shower in the bathroom or listening to songs by other artistes or having a walk in the evening,” he said.
“So far, my best experience as an artiste is seeing my single, Wanted, doing great numbers on radio and amassing streams and downloads on a daily basis. It’s proof that I didn’t make a mistake by pursuing my artistic calling,” he added.
Mulla Rae has revealed that although he makes Afrobeats, his songs tend to lean towards Afro-fusion.
“Besides the leverage that my songwriting provides, my music is beautiful because it’s a mix of catchy hook lines, melodious tunes and a soft-paced voice.
“I am proud to say that my voice is unique in the whole industry. Although I make Afrobeats music, my songs lean towards Afrofusion sound.”
The independent artist, who is not signed to any record label considers artistes like Tuface Idibia, Davido, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Olamide and Omah Lay as his role models in the industry even though he admits he is yet to have a mentor.
