THE Nation reporter, Wale Ajetunmobi, has been selected to participate in the United States Department of State Foreign Press Centre (FPC) Tour, a fully-funded reporting fellowship to cover the U.S. electioneering and presidential campaigns.
The tour focuses on the roles of American youth in strengthening U.S. politics and democratic practice. It is in line with the Department of State’s goal to strengthen democratic institutions and promote opportunity, including youth empowerment and information on civic engagement and good governance.
Ajetunmobi, who coordinates CAMPUSLIFE – a student- and youth-focused section of The Nation, was nominated by the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria on August 2, to participate in programme, which starts on September 19.
About 100 journalists worldwide were nominated for the programme by U.S. foreign missions in over 110 countries. The nominees submitted their background information, and no less than two previous stories, which must explain their experience in covering politics and youth activities.
Ajetunmobi is among 25 shortlisted to participate in the tour after a rigorous screening by officials of the Department of State Bureau of Public Affairs in Washington DC.
The participants will feature reports on the campaigns and youth activities in the political process in their respective media organisations. The aim is to educate global audience on the U.S. democratic practice.
