NCDC: 36 monkeypox cases recorded in one week

Nigeria has recorded 36 new confirmed cases of monkeypox in one week – between August 22 and 28, 2022 – according to the recent epidemiological report by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

This brings the total number of confirmed cases since January this year to 277, with six deaths reported.

The additional 36 confirmed cases were reported in 14 states: Lagos (seven), Abia (six), Bayelsa (five), Edo (three), Ondo (three), Delta (two), Ebonyi (two), Rivers (two), Anambra (one), Benue (one), Gombe (one), Imo (one), Katsina (one) and Oyo (one).

According to the report obtained by The Nation, the six associated deaths were recorded from six states, namely: Delta (one), Lagos (one), Ondo (one) and Akwa Ibom (one), Kogi (one) and Taraba (one) CFR 2.16 per cent.

The NCDC noted that since January this year, seven states have not recorded a confirmed case. The states are: Enugu, Ekiti, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Yobe and Jigawa). Jigawa and Yobe are yet to report a suspected case.

The NCDC said: “One hundred new suspected cases reported in Epi-week 34 (August 22 to 28) from 21 states: Lagos (17), Abia (16), Imo (14), Delta (seven), Ondo (seven), Bayelsa (five), Gombe (five), Rivers (four), Benue (three), Ebonyi (three), Edo (three), Plateau (three), FCT (two), Katsina (tow), Osun (two), Taraba (two), Anambra (one), Enugu (one), Kano (one), and Oyo (one).
