The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said that it rehabilitated and counselled 122 drug users in the last one year in Enugu State.
The Enugu State Commander of NDLEA, Abel Sunu Wadahi, disclosed this in an address he presented at a seminar to mark the United Nations Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held on Wednesday, June 26, in Enugu, the state capital.
The event involved school pupils from the various primary and secondary schools within the state capital and other stakeholders.
Wasahi said the agency seized 1,874 tons of illicit drugs and substances, which included cocaine, cannabis sativa, and methamphetamine (mkpuru mmiri), and prosecuted a total of 51 suspected drug offenders within the same period, while 85 cases were still pending in various courts.
He noted that drug abuse is central to insurgencies and other criminalities in the country, adding that the war against Drug abuse had been a tremendous success as an effective tool of advocacy for social action and awareness-driven vehicle for public engagement and collaboration against illicit trafficking and abuse.
“Enugu state Command has put in place strategies to continue to arrest drug traffickers as well as seize all illicit drugs being peddled around Enugu state and environs
“Within the period under review, the Command has as well, counselled, treated, and rehabilitated 22 clients, including 52 brief interventions”, Wadahi said.
The state commander therefore called on all those who are into drug abuse and need succour and help to come forward and get counseling from the Enugu state command of the agency.
He also called on the entire society beginning with the family and parents, to teach their children, as they grow, why drug use is bad.
“This is because of the dire consequences it portends. Good parenting is of utmost importance in this respect.
“Equally important are the community level, religious bodies, traditional institutions and NGOs in our strive to contain the drug menace”
The state Commissioner for Health, Emmanuel Obi said that drug trafficking and abuse could destroy the future of any child who indulges in it.
