Nigeria on global stage through Afrobeats, says Derek Odaro

Dotty Worldwide Entertainment boss, Derek Odaro has said that Nigeria has been placed on the global stage due to the influence of Afro Beats which originated from the country.

The Nigerian-born British citizen avowed that Nigerians living abroad are now proud to be identified with the ‘Giant of Africa’ because of its music export which is currently gaining massive popularity in the world of entertainment.

Odaro who currently manages Davido Music Worldwide act, B-Red told The Nation that while the government is not doing enough for its people, the youths in the entertainment business are representing the country positively globally.

“I was born in the UK and I remember growing up in the UK was not really cool being Nigerian but now it’s just so cool to be Nigerian but I know it’s not because of what the government has done which is actually zero but because of the entertainment industry”, said Derek Odaro.

“Nigeria music is doing us proud, is globally recognized. Back then in the Uk, some of our brothers classed themselves as Jamaicans but now because of the way Afrobeats has taken over the world, we are proud to be Nigerians.

“We are now so proud when we travel around. I just came back from South Africa, I also went to Namibia and reception was so welcoming because Nigerian artistes have put our music into the world stage which is good for us.”

He further revealed that his entertainment company is looking to sign at least two more artists by summer of 2023.

Asked about what he looks at before signing an artiste, he said: “I look at their energy, the vibes they will bring. I need artists that have style and drive to succeed.”

On his relationship with Davido, Odaro said: “I’ve been a big fan of Davido before I even started working with him and he’s got a big heart because he does quite a lot for the industry.”
