Nine killed, six injured in Adamawa tipper accident

Nine people have died and six others injured in Adamawa State after a tipper lost control and rammed into the victims.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning at Viniklang, a densely populated community in Girei local government area, near the state capital, Yola.

A witness told our correspondent that the victims were mostly roadside traders and no sooner had the accident happened than angry residents set the tipper on fire.

Another witness said the tipper driver, who was moving towards Yola, must have tried to minimise casualty when he noticed that his brake had failed by turning to the left side of the road where there were fewer people at the time of the incident.

Witnesses spoke of dozens and even scores of people have died as the result of the tipper running into them, but security sources put the casualty at nine deaths.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) at the scene would not speak.

When our correspondent visited the sector office in Girei town too, the head of the office refused to talk, protesting the casualty figures were being exaggerated.
