NPC begins trial census in Daura today

The National Population Commission, NPC, has said it will commence counting the homeless, beggars, buildings and the listing of people in Daura, Katsina State on today, as part of its current trial census which ends on July 31.

The NPC Federal Commissioner in charge of Katsina State, Bala Banye who said this in Daura yesterday during a town hall meeting said the homeless, including beggars, vagrants and lunatics would be counted on the midnight of 22, July 2022.

He said: “Actual Enumeration of all people will begin from July 22 to 26, 2022 (five days). After the validation, enumerators are expected to start enumeration of all people on a de-facto basis.

“By 12:00 a.m. of July 22 2022, enumerators will begin to count the homeless found in their enumeration areas. The homeless include beggars, vagrants and lunatics who are usually found in public places. These are places where the homeless sleep for instance market squares and motor parks. The enumeration will end on July 26 2022. ”

He also said there would be a “mop-up enumeration” from July 27 to 31 2022.

He further stated that the mop-up enumeration was applicable to enumerators who face challenges within the enumeration period such as security challenges; accessibility to restricted areas and hard-to-reach terrains, among others.

The NPC boss appealed to all stakeholders including Katsina State Government officials, security agencies and Daura Emirate Council, district heads in the Emirate as well as religious leaders and the member representing Daura Local Government Area at the State House of Assembly to support the exercise.

Banye had earlier clarified that the outcome of the trial census would not form the basis of the 2023 Census.

Banye also said that six local government areas would be fully enumerated in six geopolitical zones across Nigeria during the trial census.

He also said that 7,718 enumerator administrators have been selected for the trial census to test-run the suitability and readiness of the commission for the actual census in 2023.
