The Ondo State House of Assembly yesterday hailed the appointment of the National Coordinator of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Otunba Gani Adams, as the Aare Ona Kakaanfo of the Yoruba by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III.
It described the appointment as a good development.
The member representing Akoko North West Constituency I, Jamiu Suleiman, moved a motion of public importance at plenary on the title given to Gani Adams.
The lawmaker said there was need for the Assembly to congratulate Adams, who he described as the state’s illustrious son.
Adams is an indigene of Arigidi-Akoko in Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Aanother lawmaker, Suleiman Maito described Adams as the first Ondo man to become Aare, stressing that his pedigree in championing the Yoruba cause stood him out for the honour.
He said: “We all know the impact of the OPC during the struggle for the actualisation of the June 12 election, presumed to have been won by the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. Though he died in detention, but the Yoruba benefited from the outcome of the struggle when every part of Nigeria supported Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to become President in 1999…”
