Interventions of Lagos State in education is focused on ensuring children become better and more productive, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has said.
He spoke at the closing of the two-day education summit organised by Ministry of Education, with the theme: ‘Creating a Sustainable Fit-For-Purpose Education Model’, at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island.
On getting out-of-school children back into classrooms, he said: “The State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) does a lot of work in bringing these set of children back into the school. SUBEB was able to identify why children are out of school…’’
The deputy governor, who stressed the importance of creating a sustainable education system fit-for-purpose, said the conversation must take the front steps for concrete implementation.
Commissioner for Education Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo noted that Nigeria had a lot to do in improving education.
“This summit is about audacity. Some of the outcomes will contribute to the process of solving education problems in Nigeria. The focus is not the problems, but now we want to come up with solutions. We want ideas that the state can implement.
“The state has implemented 210 of 220 resolutions … We have employed over 7,000 teachers…”
The commissioner also said the state was using technology in teaching as shown in the EKOEXCEL Initiative.
Vice Chancellor of Pan Atlantic University Prof. Enase Okonedo, in her lecture, lamented the decay in education, saying the knowledge-based system was no longer appropriate.
She said the system only allowed students read for exams and pass, after which they forget what they had been taught, thereby failing to prepare them for practical application of what they learnt.
