Deaf Supporters’ Group (DSG) has urged the National Assembly to pass a disability bill into law as recommended by the United Nations (UN) for persons living with disability.
It said the law would help the deaf overcome the challenges and discrimination they suffered because of their physical situation.
DSG’s National President, Afolabi Dahunsi, stated that many of its members preferred to seek a life abroad because of the bleak circumstances they faced at home.
“Many have learnt skills in craft and trades but they have no capital to set up a small scale business,” he said.
The disability law, he added, would provide a legal basis for the deaf to be financially included in Nigeria’s economy.
Dahunsi said: “Financial inclusion that will allow our people to borrow funds and transact businesses of their choice without discrimination. Grants and subventions must be given to deaf organisations too without discrimination.
“Sports is another way to reduce poverty in the deaf community. Corporate organisations should also assist the deaf to access education by giving us scholarships.”
