PDP reconciliation panel to brief Damagum-led NWC Tuesday

Ambassador Umar Ilyas Damagum

The National Reconciliation Committee of main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it will meet today in Abuja with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), led by its acting Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum.

Addressing reporters after the committee’s meeting with members of the national caucus and other stakeholders yesterday in Abuja, the chairman of the reconciliation committee, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, declined to comment on specific efforts to bring back leading party chieftains, including Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, into the beleaguered party.

The committee chairman said any talks about bringing back the estranged chieftains were speculative.

“As far as we are concerned, I will take that one as a rumour because we are meeting with the National Working Committee tomorrow. So, after tomorrow, you can ask me,” he said.

Commenting on what his committee had achieved so far, Oyinlola said: “Regarding our assignment as members of the National Reconciliation Committee, we are scheduled to meet the members of the National Assembly so that we can share in their experiences as to what is causing the dwindling fortunes of our party, politically.

“We’ve had useful discussions with them. I think there are suggestions that will help our party to unite and remain formidable. That’s what has happened this evening.

“One obvious thing required for any party to be able to go into a battle and win is that it must be united. That’s what we are going for.”

The committee chairman also spoke about the upcoming governorship election in Ondo State.

He said: “The National Reconciliation Committee has had its tour of the Southwest and the issue of the Ondo election came up prominently. We are putting our strategies into place.”
