Peace Corps will address security challenges, says Commandant

Cross River State Commandant of the Nigeria Peace Corps, Patriot Okweche Dominic, has assured that the organization would address Nigeria’s security challenges when it gets the full support of the government.

Okweche, who stated this during a rally organised in Calabar to appreciate the National Assembly for the passage of the bill establishing the organisation, said that there’s more to security than bearing arms.

He said the security issues confronting the country cannot be resolved only with arms, stressing that Peace Corps was coming to support the efforts of the existing security outfits in combating crime through intelligent policing.

While lauding the doggedness and commitment of the National Assembly towards the passage of the bill, the commandant said “ the lawmakers and President Muhammadu Buhari, have the interest of Nigerians at heart and that is why they have collectively ensured that the bill is passed, to create employment for the teeming youths.”

The commandant said the organisation which was established 19 years ago has its overall mandate as a neighborhood watch, as well as fight crimes in the society.

He said officers and men of the corps were well trained and combat ready at any time.

He commended Governor Ben Ayade for his support and cooperation particularly, especially in the areas of  providing vehicles and office accommodation to the organisation.

Special Adviser to the governor on Special Projects, Monitoring and Evaluation, Engr Thomas Aruku, assured of the state government’s commitment to tackling insecurity and creating more job opportunities for the youths of the state.

Director of Operations of the state’s Homeland Security, Mr Raphael Odu, said “ security is everybody’s business. The citizens should  work with security agencies in the state to tackle the challenge of insecurity.”
