The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) in Ekiti State has threatened to sue Governor Kayode Fayemi over gratuity and pension arrears.

It decried the failure of the  government to offset gratuities and  pensions owed its members since 2012 despite promises by the governor to clear outstanding benefits before leaving office.

The NUP Chairman, Joel Akinola, said yesterday in Ado-Ekiti that the non-payment of gratuities and pensions had caused untimely deaths of their members, resulting from inability to access medical care and food.

He said about 587 pensioners were  either dead or bedridden in Ekiti due to infirmity suffered as a  result of the inability to get required treatments for their ailments.

Akinola, who expressed concern about the enthusiasm displayed by the government towards paying the severance packages of the recently sacked appointees, urged the governor to pay their benefit alongside, in the spirit of fairness, equity and justice.
