Abia State Police Command will check proliferation of unregistered security outfits, Police Commissioner Mr Leye Oyebade has said.
He made the promise yesterday in Umuahia while briefing reporters on efforts by the command to reduce crime.
Oyebade said operations of unregistered security outfits constituted a breach of the law.
He urged the people behind such outfits to disband them or be sanctioned.
The Police chief said: “Setting up parallel security organisations when there are existing ones, such as the Police, Army, Navy, Air Force, Civil Defence, among others, is criminal.
“The Abia command is against such organisations and will deal with them.’’
Oyebade cited the unlawful activities of an organisation, “BBS”, allegedly trending in the social media.
He said the command busted two suspected kidnap syndicates in Aba.
Oyebade said his men arrested Samuel Akoma from Umuako-Obohia Ibere in Ikwuano Local Government and Kenneth Ananaba from Ugwunagbo.
The police boss said the men were nabbed in a hotel at Aba in connection with the kidnap of Kelvin Wogu.
He said the suspected kidnappers kidnapped Wogu from his Toyota Highlander Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) at Omenazu Street, Aba.
Oyebade said the suspects confessed to the crime, adding that they collected N3 million ransom from the victim.
He said the confession by the suspects led to the arrest of another member, Goodluck Sunday, in his Umuobi Ukpakiri in Obingwa.
The commissioner gave a list of items recovered from the gang as Mitsubishi SUV registered as Abia: UMA 103 SW and the stolen Toyota Highlander.
Oyebade announced the arrest of a robbery suspect, Obioma Onwuchekwa, of Umuozuo in Osisioma Local Government.
He said the suspect, who had been on the police wanted list since April after a robbery in Aba, was caught in Calabar.
The Police chief said the suspect was arrested at the Calabar Office of the Federal Road Safety Corps, while attempting to re-register a Toyota Highlander SUV, with an initial registration number.
He said investigation showed the vehicle was snatched from its owner, Jeff Omadewu, in Aba.
