A lawyer, identified as Barr. Ndubuisi Uhugbu, 49 years has been dragged
before an Aba South Magistrate Court after he allegedly failed to produce a
client (Nkechinyere Chima Eze), he took on bail at the Aba Area Command.
*The Nation* gathered that Uhugbu had on December 1, 2015 signed a surety
for his client, Eze who was detained by Police Operatives for issuing a
three million naira dud cheque to a business partner with the promise that
he was going to produce her anytime they needed her to come.
The lawyer, it was gathered failed to produce his client on December 8 last
year as he had promised and was subsequently charged before the court.
Uhugbu was arraigned on a two count charge of violating Act 27 (b) cap 3359
laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1990, section 137 of Criminal Procedure Act cap 80 Laws of the Federation 1990 as applicable in Abia State, Nigeria and obstructing, perverting, prevent or defeat the cause of justice by failing to produce his client Nkechinyere on Dec. 8
and subsequently; punishable under section 126 of the Criminal Code cap 80
vol.3 Laws of Abia State of Nigeria respectively.
The lawyer who had Chief Emeka Okeke as defence counsel, pleaded not guilty to the charges and was subsequently granted bail on self recognition by the trial magistrate, Chijioke Nwogu and was not opposed by the prosecutor, Inspector Betran Anozie.
The matter was later adjourned to May 23 for hearing.
