Police probe death of widow, five children who ate expired food in Kano

The police in Kano are investigating the mysterious death of a mother and five of her children.

Mrs Alhakatu Abdulkarim and her five children, Bashir, Firdausi, Hafsat, Usman and Jamilu were reported to have died after eating “expired food.”

Sources said the deceased widow, who is the bread winner of her five children, had used “expired cassava flour” to prepare the food, which consumed their lives.

The Kano State Police Command yesterday confirmed the tragedy, saying the deceased hailed from Karkari village, Gwarzo Local Government Area of the state.

They died after eating Danwake, a local Hausa delicacy, police said.

Police spokesman, Abdullahi Kiyawa, said: “The six members of the family who ate the food were rushed to Gwarzo General Hospital where they were confirmed dead by doctors.“An investigation has commenced to ascertain the real cause of their demise.

“We are still waiting for the medical report from the hospital to ascertain the cause of the death of the six persons,” Kiyawa, a Superintendent of the Police (SP), said.
