The police have waded into the death of a 200-level student of Obafemi University Ile-Ife, Ajibola Heritage Ayomikun, who died inside the hostel’s soakaway.
The Nation reports that Heritage, a student of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, who was living in a private hostel at student village, fell inside the soakaway through an opening on the pit and died before the arrival of the rescue team led by the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof Eyitope Ogunmodede, on Wednesday.
A statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of OAU, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju, disclosed that the Criminal Investigation Department of the Osun State Police Command has taken over the investigation of the circumstances that led to Heritage’s death.
He said: “Heritage resided in one of the private hostels named BVER and died in the septic tank. The incident saddened the university management. It is tragic, devastating, unfortunate and unacceptable.
”The owner of the private hostel, BVER, where the incident occurred, has been issued a query by the university management and his response is being awaited.
”It must be noted that all the hostels in the students’ village are privately owned and they are not under the control of the university.
“The university management presently has only oversight functions on these private hostels.”
