Reps confirm CDS, service chiefs

The House of Representatives yesterday confirmed the appointment of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and the Service Chiefs whose names were forwarded to the Green Chamber by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. 

The confirmation followed the consideration of the report of the ad hoc committee, headed by Babajimi Benson and comprised all principal officers of the House, which screened the appointees.

The House confirmed Maj.-Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa as the CDS; Maj.-Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja as Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Rear Admiral Emmanuel lkechukwu Ogalla as Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) and Air Vice Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar as Chief of Air Staff (CAS). 

The House committee had, on Monday, screened the four appointees, following the request forwarded to the House by the President. 

The Senate had cleared the appointees who will be decorated with their new ranks by the President. 

Also at plenary yesterday, the House considered and passed its first Bill since its inauguration on June 13. 

The Bill was passed by the Ninth Assembly and not assented to by former President Muhammadu Buhari before he left office.

But it was reintroduced to the 10th Assembly and referred to the Committee of the Whole for considerations in accordance with the House Rules. 

The Bill seeks to repeal the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria Act Cap. D4, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and Enact the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria Act, 2023, to Operate, Maintain and Control Subsidiaries and Ordnance Factories for the Manufacture, Storage and Disposal of Ordinance and Ancillary Stores and Material; provide a Comprehensive Framework for the Regulation of the Manufacture, Distribution, Storage and Disposal of Defence Articles, Support Research activities in Defence-Related Fields.
