The House of Representatives wants the federal government to rehabilitate the Otta-Abeokuta Expressway which is currently in a bad state.
The House said the sorry situation of the road, a major artery in communication in the country, now causes avoidable traffic gridlock resulting in severe loss of man-hours and loss of lives and property.
The decision of the lawmakers followed the adoption of a motion by Ayokunle Isiaka (APC, Ogun), who noted that the highway, due to its strategic location between Ogun and Lagos States, records a high volume of vehicular movement especially petrol tankers and articulated vehicles on a daily basis. The Otta-Abeokuta axis is also home to many manufacturing companies.
He said: “As the wet season looms, it has become imperative for urgent work to construct drainage structures to channel water from Joju Junction into Owode Canal along the expressway, which will bring succour to the residents and motorists alike.
“The need to urgently begin the rehabilitation of the road cannot be overemphasized in order to relieve the communities of the prolonged period of hardship they had endured due to the bad state of the road.”
The motion was unanimously adopted after a voice vote and referred to Committee on Works for further legislative input.
