‘Restore History in schools’

Historians have converged on Ondo town seeking that History be re-introduced as a subject in schools for national rebirth.

They met at the Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, at a colloquium organised by the History Department in collaboration with the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN).

Addressing participants, HSN President Prof Chris Ogbogbo praised the Federal Government for removing History from Social Studies.

The University of Ibadan (UI) don said in line with the Federal Government’s decision the society developed a curriculum for the study of History from primary one to Junior Secondary School 3 and sponsored a bill to the Senate to make History compulsory in schools.

He lauded HSN members for their perseverance, doggedness and unrelenting spirit for the restoration of History to its pride of place in school curriculum.

The don lamented what he called “wrongful” removal of history from the nation’s school curriculum and its inclusion into Social Studies.
