The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has begun sitting in Enugu over cases of alleged human rights violation by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the police in the Southeast.
Ten complaints from Enugu and Anambra states were listed for hearing.
The cases centred on unlawful detention, denial of rights to personal liberty and violation of the right to life.
One of the complaints was from Ambrose Okafor of Nteje, Anambra State, whose son was allegedly arrested and detained in 2014.
The concerned father was allegedly denied access to his son till date.
Ugwu Chinedu Paul of Nike, Enugu State, was said to have been arrested and killed by SARS operatives, while Chibuike Edu of Enugu State was allegedly tortured to death by the operatives.
The panel also heard the complaint of alleged killing of Master Amaechi Onyezue of Anambra State by the operatives at Neni, Anambra State.
The panelists included NHRC’s Director of Legal Services, Mr. Olaniyi Omolara (Chairman) with the Head of Monitoring, Mr. Benedict Agu and Assistant Director Investigation, Mr. Richmond Iheme.
Hearing in the complaints was adjourned due to unpreparedness of police lawyers to defend the allegations on the grounds that they were not given enough notice about the sitting.
