The judiciary has been commended over the trial and recent conviction of former Governor of Taraba State, Jolly Nyame, over financial misappropriation committed while he was governor of the state.
The commendation was given on Thursday in Lagos by the Executive Director of the Centre Against Impunity and Domestic Violence (CAIDOV), Comrade Gbenga Soloki, while reacting to the court judgement.
He said the latest verdict on corruption has shown clearly that the present judiciary would not condone any corrupt act.
The CAIDOV boss stated that the judgement was delivered carefully by the learned judge and the penalty strictly meted out, describing it as a deserved judgment which would prevent other public office holders from stealing from government coffers.
He further said: “On behalf of the centre, I must commend Justice Banjoko and the judiciary in its entirety for this landmark judgement. It has clearly shown that the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man and will always redress injustice. “The former Governor Nyame and other corrupt Nigerians don’t deserve mercy and respect.
“We call on the leadership of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to double its efforts by embarking on diligent investigations of those already indicted and allowing the courts to carry out their duties as in the case of Nyame.
Soloki further said: “The political party which initiated the criminal case against Jolly should not be an issue of debate. What is important to us at the CAIDOV is that the common man has won.”
