AS part of the activities marking the World Polio Day, Rotary International District 9110 has held a walk to celebrate two years of the eradication of polio in the country.
The walk, which held at the weekend, was led by the District Governor (DG), Mrs Omotunde Lawson. It started from the district headquarters in Ikeja GRA, Lagos to Ikeja Under Bridge, moved towards the state Secretariat but veered off at Olowu Junction, at the end of which it turned left and moved towards Maryland. At the Country Club Junction, it turned in and returned to the çlub.

Addressing Lagosians at a spot close to Olowu Junction, Mrs Lawson said though Nigeria had been left off the hook of countries with polio since 2020, the walk’s second objective was to create more awareness that there was the need to be cautious to avoid a recurrence. She noted that the two countries – Afghanistan and Pakistan – were yet to cleared by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

She advised Nigerians with children who are between zero and five years to bring them out for free immunisation during their campaign, adding that the vaccination prevents the disease.
The Chairman, District PolioPlus Committee, Mr. Ademola Olutunsin, expressed satisfaction with the turn out. He said there was the need to continue to keep the country’s polio status at zero.
At the event were the Chief Executive of Family Health Days and HIV Prevention (RFHD), Sue Paget; Senior Programme Officer, Bill and Melinda Gates, Andre Thompson, some past DGs, presidents and Rotarians, among others.
