Rotary is for service to humanity, says ex-president

Outgoing President of Rotary Club of Gbagada South, Lanre Akosile, has said the main objective of Rotary worldwide is to serve people in need, especially the less privileged.

He spoke when he handed over to President, Ezekiel Balogun, at Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

Akosile, the 20th president, said funds for executing programmes and projects are self-generated, adding the government does not support them.

But he acknowledged the assistance of public-spirited individuals.

Despite committing their resources to the causes of people in healthcare, education, water, among others, he added they do not get any reward. Their joy, he said, is derived from the smiles they put on the faces of beneficiaries.

Akosile told Balogun Rotary’s work is continuum and his tenure, as others before him, is one year.

He challenged Balogun to  “explore new opportunities” to develop the club further.

Akosile urged members to support Balogun, adding Rotary’s work is teamwork.

Balogun, who described the event as a new dawn, said: “A new year has just started.”

He promised to take the club to newer heights. “I will not disappoint you. I will prosecute this year’s theme, which is Hope,” he pledged.

Outgoing Secretary, Wale Akinwande, said it was smooth sailing for them despite odds.

Former President, Ademola Olutusin praised Akosile for his achievements.

Rotary International District Governor-elect, Olufemi Adenekan, hailed the club for carrying itself well at the last district conference in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.
