Cristiano Ronaldo put Portugal within touching distance of the Confederations Cup semi-finals with his early goal enough to see the European champions collect three points against hosts Russia.
Ronaldo’s eighth-minute header from close range was the only clear chance in a poor first half but Russia came alive in the second with Portugal clinging onto their lead for much of the second period.
The win sees them top Group A with only a game against minnows New Zealand remaining. Mexico can join them on four points if they beat the Oceania representative later on Wednesday.
