THE Senate yesterday urged the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to arrest the killers of Abuja preacher, Mrs. Eunice Olawale Elisha.
Mrs. Elisha was murdered around Gbazango in Kubwa, Bwari Area Council, of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, on Saturday.
The order followed a motion by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who drew the attention of the Senate to the murder of the preacher.
The Lagos Central lawmaker lamented that unwarranted killings of Nigerians were becoming too rampant.
She said: “The Senate should note the murder of Deaconess Eunice Mojisola Olawale, a woman preacher on Saturday July 9, 2016, at 5 am, at Kubwa FCT, Abuja.
“The Senate is saddened by the unfortunate incident, which left the husband, the widower and seven children motherless.
“The Senate recalls that Eunice Olawale has been into early morning preaching for years without complaints from any quarters.
“The Senate is saddened that on this fateful day as she was being attacked and shouting for help, no one came to her rescue.
“The Senate observes that unwarranted killings are becoming rampant in Nigeria.”
Senate President Bukola Saraki said in line with the Senate rule, there can be no further debate.
Saraki added: “In line with our rule we should all stand up and observe one minute silence in honour of the deceased and pray that we see an end to this kind of killings.”
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said several zones of the body have asked for permission to protest against the murder.
CAN’s Chairman in the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) Rev. Israel Akanji spoke to reporters after a closed meeting with his executive committee yesterday.
