Seven persons were yesterday rescued from the rubble of a supermarket that went down in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

Those pulled from the building were said to have sustained minor injuries, with the wife of the supermarket owner and her friend being among them.

The supermarket is located on Nnebisi Road.

The building, which is a duplex, served as the state secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Nation gathered that the supermarket collapsed at about 6.00 p.m.

An official of the supermarket said 600 bags of rice were earlier offloaded on the first floor of the supermarket.

Officials of the State Red Cross and operatives of the Delta State Police Command had a hectic time controlling bystanders at the scene.

Sacks of rice were scattered under the debris of the building.

The incident caused traffic gridlock.

A source suggested that the building may have collapsed due to the huge number of bags of rice loaded on first floor.

Secretary to the Delta State government, Patrick Ukah, appealed for calm while thorough investigation was carried out.
