She Creates 2023 Camp opens for 13 to 17-year-old girls

Award-winning  strem summer programme, She Creates 2023 Camp, has opened for 13 to 17-year-old girls.

The Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) camp programme is designed to support early intervention, dispel preconceptions, and address the gender gap in technology.

The residential STEAM camp with the theme: Solve With AI, will focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI), internet of things, and software development, with the goal of giving participants the skills they need to keep up with current global developments.

Speaking about the camp in Lagos, the Executive Director of Women in Tech (WTECH), Oreoluwa Lesi, said the programme aims to inspire love for technology by delivering challenging and engaging hands-on technology workshops and classes.

She explained that the programme would encourage girls to explore technology careers by giving a realistic and positive idea of technology-related areas of endeavours through career talks and career-themed films.

She said: “It will help girls to plan their future careers with the assistance of mentors and women currently working in these fields. It will also encourage out-of-the-box thinking by helping girls to develop critical thinking skills within a nurturing environment while gaining fundamental life skills, such as etiquette, teamwork, and leadership skills.”

Lesi said this year’s programme will hold in Lagos from August 6 to 19.

The executive director urged prospective participants to complete the online registration form on camp@wtec.org.ng or call 08124183666 for more information.

She stressed that the camps would provide a high-quality and exciting environment where the girls would learn to create useful technologies for everyday living through highly insightful sessions, like computer programming, robotics and mobile application development.

According to her, other skills to learn are graphics designing, renewable energy, digital film production, artificial intelligence (AI), chemical science, digital electronics technology, and digital animation programming.

Lesi assured prospective participants that the listed digital skills would also help schoolgirls to develop an early interest in computer science, information technology, Engineering, Medicine, and other STEAM-related careers.

“In addition, the camp will also provide engaging extracurricular activities, mentorship sessions, skill-acquisition programmes, excursions, and fascinating hands-on technology classes,” she said.
