Sheikh Goni: Court vacation stalls suspects’ trial

COURT

The trial of two dismissed soldiers, Lance Corporals John Gabriel and Adamu Gideon over the killing of Yobe State Islamic cleric Sheikh Aisami Goni may be delayed because the courts are on break.

Police have sent the case file to the state Ministry of Justice but the case cannot be filed because of the vacation.

“The police have finished their job and sent the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice. As soon as the file is returned to us, we shall be proceeding to the high court with the charges,” police spokesman Dungus Abdulkareen told The Nation.

The DPP, Ali Adams, also confirmed the receipt of the case file, saying, “Yes we have received the case file from the police but due to the vacation of the higher courts across the country, it will take a little time before the suspects would be arraigned.

“We are however [hoping the case file would be ready before the resumption of the court which maybe in the middle of this month,” Adams said.

Sheikh Goni was killed on August 19 on his way from Kano to his hometown Gashua.
