The Coalition of Nigerian Youths on Safety and Security Affairs (CONYSSA) are seeking the passage and signing into law of the Bill of Nigeria National Commission against the Proliferation of Small Arms, Ammunition and Light Weapons.
The President and National Coordinator, CONYSSA, Ademario Emmanuel, said the Bill is important to Nigerians and shouldn’t be treated with any form of disinterest by the leadership of the National Assembly.
Making the call at a press conference in Abuja, he described the delay in the passage of the Bill as inconsistent with the good track record of the 9th National Assembly. He added that if nothing is done about the Bill, the youths will embark on a nationwide protest.
According to him, “It will be recalled that this Bill has already passed the Second Reading in the Senate, but has not been treated further since then. The Youths are agitating for the quick passage and signing into law of the Bill, claiming it has the potency of generating mass employment and positively engaging young people without adding any pressure on the purse of the Federal Government, instead would rake in reasonable financial proceeds to the national treasury.
“The proposed Commission has been designed to positively and economically engage hundreds of thousands of youths, with very little or no financial pressure on the national purse, but instead rake in reasonable resources to the national treasury. Furthermore, the commission, if established, will serve effectively as a veritable grassroots information gathering mechanism that would be useful for intelligence gathering by the nation’s security apparatus.”
