Lagosians have been asked to stop dumping refuse into drainages.
Drain Ducks Chief Executive Officer Akeem Apatira, told The Nation.
He said Lagos State, which has a larger percentage of its landed area below sea level must always do everything to avoid flooding.
According to him, the dumping of wastes into drainages has compounded the flood prone terrain, as the refuse ends up blocking the gutter, causing heavy flooding.
He said the advice became necessary as another rainy season beckons.
Apatira said though the agency has modern and sophisticated equipment to de-silt drainages, its work would be made easier if residents became more disciplined in the disposal of wastes.
He said: “Studies have shown that our drainages are always blocked as a result of heaps of garbage and remnants of dis-used items such as empty water bottles, jerry cans, polythene bags, worn out tyres, building materials engine blocks mattresses, cement bags, car batteries, silts and debris of all sorts, dumped into the drainages by residents of the state.”
