  • 10 killed, over 100 houses set ablaze in Benue community

Over 10 persons have been killed and about 100 houses set ablaze in Aila, Egba ward, Agatu Local Government Area since crisis broke out over fishing pond in Benue State.

The Chairman of Agbaduma Development Association (AGA), Makurdi branch, Benjamin Eigege, disclosed this during interactive session with journalist in Makurdi, Benue State capital.

Eigege also called on the state and federal governments to deploy security men in Aila community to protect lives and property.

He said the people of Aila have been under incessant attacks from neighbouring Egba community over fishing pond which is in dispute.

According to him, suspected militia have so far killed 10 persons in Aila and set houses ablaze, with many rendered homeless.

Eigege noted that the lingering crisis assumed a more dangerous dimension on 18th of March this year when an Aila man, Nghede Ibrahim, was shot dead at the fishing pond by suspected militia from Egba, an adjoining village.

He stated further that the Acting Chairman of Agatu Local Government Council, Alhaji Oyigbocho, visited Aila community to calm down tension and to plead against reprisal attacks, but immediately he left, some suspected militia stormed Aila community and killed 9 persons.

“They set over 100 houses ablaze and destroyed property worth millions,” Eigege said.

More worrisome to Aila community, he said, is that when security men were deployed to the area, instead of going to Aila community, who are always at the receiving end of the attacks, they are now stationed at Egba community, the people he alleged are suspected to be behind the killings.

He traced the history of the bloody lingering crisis to a fishing pond which is in dispute.

According to him, attempts to get protection from the Benue security outfits have failed so they resort to “Save our Souls” messages to the state and federal governments through the media.

He therefore calls for immediate intervention from the government to enable Aila people go back to their ancestral land and farm as raining season has set in.

In its reaction, the Benue Police Command called for calm and promised to deploy more policemen to the area.

Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Alhaji Oyigocho, could not be reached but a member of Agatu Local Government Council said efforts are in top gear to bring the Egba/Aila lingering crisis to an end.

He said a meeting of critical stakeholders is schedule to hold soon so as to find lasting peace among the warring communities.

  • 10 killed, scores injured in Imo cult war

Ten students have been killed and several others injured in a cult war at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo State.

The killings by rival cults on vengeance mission have been on in the last one week.

Victims were either shot or clubbed to death before being decapitated by the cultists.

It was gathered that the clash between two rival cults, the Ayes and Baggers confraternities, had lasted over two weeks.

Residents have fled their homes for fear of being attacked.

Academic activities have been grounded at the polytechnic. Students have deserted their hostels.

The management of the institution, The Nation learnt, had restricted movement in and out of the school after 6pm.

One of the students, who preferred anonymity, said: “We are under attack by cultists. Please help us to inform the police because our lives are in danger. Since 10 days now, there have been clashes between two rival cults. They said it is a supremacy war. No fewer than 10 persons have been shot dead.”

The visibly scared student added: “Since I gained admission into this polytechnic, I have never witnessed this kind of violence. The gunshots are frightening. Please don’t mention my name.”

An indigene of one of the host communities, who also does not want his name in print, said since the deadly cult clash started, they had been locking themselves inside their rooms.

Police spokesman Orlando Ikeokwu said officers had been deployed in the polytechnic and other troubled areas, adding that suspects had been arrested.

The Rector, Martin Aligbe, in a phone chat said: “We have not confirmed any of the victims to be our student. The cult clashes are happening in the villages, they are not occurring on our campus. But we are worried because some of our students live in these villages. We have reached out to the police to tighten security.”

  • 10 killed, 30 houses razed in renewed attack on Kaduna village

    • Buhari condemns internecine violence, calls for mediation

No fewer than 10 bodies have been recovered and about 30 houses confirmed burnt in another attack by unknown gunmen on Nandu Gbok community in Sanga Government Area of Kaduna State yesterday.

But, Kaduna State Government while confirming the attack said nine citizens were killed by criminal elements that attacked the village in the early hours of yesterday.

Reacting to the development yesterday, President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the killings and urged the actors in the communal and persistent violence in Kaduna State to come to terms with the fact that mutual violence has no winners, but losers on both sides of the conflict.

He said, “I am deeply troubled by the fact that sanctity of life is now treated with such reckless disregard that people derive joy in shedding the blood of others or perceived enemies.”

The president, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, noted that “inhumanity has replaced compassion in the hearts and minds of the perpetrators of these atrocities.”

“No responsible leader would go to bed happy to see his citizens savagely killing one another on account of ethnic and religious bigotry”, he further noted sadly.

According to Buhari, “Violence cannot be the solution to these persistent conflicts as long as people resort to deliberate provocations, revenge and counter revenge.”

He said that, “While the government remains committed to protecting its citizens, the communities involved must also put their shoulder to the wheel in order to find a lasting solution.”

According to the President, “If the people resist government’s efforts to hold the perpetrators and their sponsors accountable, it would be very difficult to bring the violence to a permanent end.”

He regretted that “everything is politicised in Nigeria, including the efforts to bring offenders to justice, because their people will rise up in arms to resist their arrests and prosecution.”

He described hate, bigotry and prejudice as “deadly poisons that have infected the human psyche on such scale that people now don’t have any moral inhibitions about taking life.”

The president also appealed to the warring communities to stop inhibiting the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA’s efforts to deliver food, medicines and temporary shelter to the victims of the violence who are in urgent need of assistance.

Also a statement signed by Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s media aide, Samuel Aruwan, the governor condemned the killings.

He said “The Kaduna State Government has been briefed by the security agencies on the killing of nine persons by criminal elements that attacked Nandu village in Sanga LGA in the early hours of today.”

  • 10 killed in renewed Kogi communal clash

Ten people were reportedly killed on Wednesday in renewed hostility between Ebira and Bassa-Komu ethnic groups in Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Scores of others were said to have sustained injuries, following the return of the displaced Ebira indigenes in a crisis which started last April.

Police spokesman William Aya, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the development yesterday in Lokoja, the state capital.

He assure the residents that the situation was under control.

But the command’s spokesman said only two persons died in the renewed clashes, which started months ago.

Aya said a team of mobile policemen, conventional policemen and soldiers were on the ground to forestall further clashes.

“Two people were killed: one yesterday (Wednesday) and the second today (yesterday). Calm has returned to the affected areas. The police commissioner in-charge of operation, mobile police, conventional police, area commanders and the Army are there to restore law and order as soon as possible,” he said.

It was gathered that following the intervention of elders in the area, the Ebira, who left their homes during the crisis, were asked to return by the state government, to pave way for lasting peace among the two ethnic groups.

To ensure lasting peace, the displaced Ebira, who were reportedly accompanied by security operatives and some political appointees, including the local government administrator, Sam Alumka and others, returned to Oguma, the headquarters of the local government area, on Wednesday.

They were said to have been kept there in anticipation that they would go to their villages and communities from Bassa.

It was alleged that uncomplimentary remarks by the paramount ruler of Bassa-Komu, the Aguma of Bassa, William Keke, sparked the latest crisis.

He reportedly said the returning Ebira people should go back to Lokoja or to where they had been staying.

A source said the Ohiogba of Mozum, Alhaji Halidu Bukar Ali and other Ebira leaders, who were at Aguma of Bassa’s palace to receive the returnees, were almost ambushed by hooligans/militia from one of the warring groups but for the timely intervention of security operatives.

It was also gathered that news of the escape from an ambush by the Ohiogba of Mozum and the Ebira leaders from Aguma palace and the “unguarded statement” spread to various communities, resulting in the latest escalation of hostilities.

Over 10 persons were said to have died in some of the communities.

It was also learnt that two residents of Mozum – Kagiwa Hussain and Aminu Usman – who were returning from Oguma, were allegedly killed by hoodlums in military uniform.

Hostility was said to have recurred at Ibiroko, Oguma, Sheria, Auta and Ojugbe communities at the time of filing this report last night.

One person was injured in the accident.

It was learnt that the bus, en route Ibadan, was trying to overtake near a road diversion when it collided with the truck, bearing cement.

For nearly an hour, the victims were reportedly trapped under the truck.

The Route Commander and Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, Florence Okpe, said a construction firm, RCC, brought its crane and removed the mangled bus from the truck to evacuate the dead.

In a statement she signed on behalf of the State Sector Commander, Clement Oladele, the commander said the dead included seven men and three women.

She added that the lone survivor was taken to Ife-Plus Hospital at Ogunmakin and the bodies deposited at FOS morgue at Ipara-Remo.

Okpe said: “A fatal crash occurred on January 9 at 2100 hours (9 p.m) immediately after the diversion made by RCC to enable repairs of weakened bridges around the segments of the expressway.

“A commercial bus in wrongful overtaking was travelling from Lagos and attempted to overtake vehicles travelling at the section of the road diversion and, in the process, collided head-on with a Dangote truck laden with cement and travelling in opposite direction – from Ibadan, and heading towards Lagos.

“This resulted in the passengers in the commercial bus trapped. It took the intervention of RCC crane requested by the FRSC Rescue team, to extricate the trapped passengers from the truck. A total of 10 of the passengers died from injuries sustained from the impact of the crash.

“They were made up of 07 male and 03 female Details of the two vehicles are a Ford bus with vehicle registration number BDJ410YM and an IVECO truck belonging to Dangote Company but with no vehicle number plate.

  • 10 killed as soldiers, El-Zakzaky supporters clash in Zaria

10 killed as soldiers, El-Zakzaky supporters clash in Zaria

•Army: It was assasination attempt on Chief of Army Staff
•Military attack was unprovoked says sect

A pall of tension descended on Zaria, Kaduna State yesterday after soldiers killed at least 10 supporters of outspoken Shi’tte leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, during a clash between the entourage of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Tukur  Buratai, and the Shi’tte members.

The development sparked a war of words between the army and the sect following claim that   members of the Muslim Brotherhood had attempted to assassinate General Buratai.

“Shiites attempt to assassinate the Chief of Army Staff in Zaria”, was the  way Army spokesman, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman broke the news  in a tweet under his official tweet handle, @HQNigerianArmy which was also posted on the Nigerian Army website last night.

He later issued a formal statement, saying: “The Shiite Sect on the orders of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky today (yesterday) in Zaria attacked the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff while on his way to pay homage on the Emir of Zazzau and attend the Passing Out Parade of 73 Regular Recruits Intake of Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria.

“The sect numbering hundreds carrying dangerous weapons, barricaded the roads with bonfires, heavy stones and tyres. They refused all entreaties to disperse and then started firing and pelting the convoy with dangerous objects. The barricade was obviously a deliberate attempt to assassinate the Chief of Army Staff and members of his entourage while on a legitimate official assignment as Special Guest of Honour at the passing out parade which had earlier been widely publicised.

“The troops responsible for the safety and security of the Chief of Army Staff on hearing explosion and firing were left with no choice than to defend him and the convoy at all cost as well as open up the barricaded road for law abiding citizens. This is in line with the Nigerian Army Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct. This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated from any individual or groups and should not be allowed to repeat itself.

“We wish to implore all Nigerians to continue to be law abiding and remain conscious of other people’s right to life, freedom of movement and passage. The Chief of Army escaped unhurt and continued with his duties.”

The sect dismissed the allegation as a lie, wondering how unarmed people would want to assassinate a service chief.

Its spokesman, Ibrahim Usman, in a counter statement, said:

“At noon today (yesterday) armed soldiers were seen in the precincts of Hussainiyyah Baqiyyatullah, Zaria, where members of the Islamic Movement were to carry out the hoisting of flag to usher in the new month of Maulud, the birth of the Holy Prophet of Islam.

“Similar occasion was previously carried out on the same spot with free traffic flow under the supervision of the Movement’s traffic warders.

“When some brothers met the soldiers to understand the mission of the soldiers, they took position and opened fire indiscriminately, killed many and took away seven of the casualties to an unknown location.

“Based on the foregoing, we believe that the military had pre-planned this and had acted according to their mischievous script. They came with their cameramen, videotaping the whole incidence while it lasted.

“We are however surprised that, spokesman of the military Colonel Kuka Sheka shamelessly came out in the media and issued a press statement to say, that it was an assassination attempt on the Chief of Army Staff on the order of the movement’s leader.

“Why was it that there were no casualties on the side of the military, if it were to be an assassination attempt? What happened was never a clash, but a continuation of act of terrorism by the Nigerian military on the Movement, as was the case in the past.

“We are not surprised by this action, as there were reports spread by the same military the night before that the Shi’ites were to avenge their dead by hired thugs on Friday in Gabari, a village in Zaria.

“The same military also spread rumour that the Shi’ites had killed soldiers, all in attempt to justify today’s (yesterday’s) dastardly act.

“Kuka Sheka should know that once bitten twice shy. The 2014 massacre of 34 members of the Islamic Movement, including three of Sheikh Zakzaky’s children by the military; the attempt on Sheikh Zakzaky’s convoy by the same military are still on our minds.

“No government can flourish successfully with disoriented military, full of trigger-itchy personnel and security operatives trained by CIA and Mossad.

“Until the present government fishes out this cabal in the military and brings the culprits to book, we will believe the government is condoning, violence and terrorism on innocent citizens.”

An eye witness Yusuf Abubakar said, “I saw two soldiers asking the Shi’ite members to remove the barricade but they refused only for the soldiers to open fire on them.

“Suddenly, there was confusion everywhere. I saw more than 30 corpses on the ground before soldiers took them away.”

Another eye witness who pleaded anonymity told The Nation that, “the soldiers were armed to the teeth as they came in about three Hilux vans and armoured personnel carriers.

“They were pleading with the Shi’tte members to clear the way for the Army Chief who was being expected.

“Rather than comply, members of the Islamic Movement said that they had blocked the road for security reasons. They began brandishing clubs and swords, chanting ‘’Allahu Akbar’’(God is great).

“A few shots followed   and we all dispersed. Some Shi’ttes lost their lives in the process.”

El-Zakzaky himself could not be immediately reached but his followers branded the army’s version of the story as an unfair and unjust portrayal of the incident.

Yesterday’s incident is the latest in the series of clashes between security agents and members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

In one of such encounters in July last year, three sons of El-Zakzaky were killed allegedly by soldiers.

The army dismissed the allegation at the time.

But the United Kingdom-based Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) issued a report blaming soldiers for what it called shooting and killing of defenceless members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria between July 25 and 26.

It said that shortly after the Jumat prayers on July 25,the Shi’tte members  embarked on the traditional Al-Quds procession done in support of the Palestinian Cause following the same route it has followed in the last 33 years.

The report said 34 defenceless members of the group were murdered in cold blood as they marched through the streets of Zaria, in Kaduna State.

About 100 others were injured, it said citing interviews with victims, their families, witnesses.

The IHRC also obtained a video footage of soldiers firing at unarmed civilians at the end of the procession.

Besides, it said that it had proof that many of those arrested died in military custody, unable to withstand the brutality they were subjected to by the soldiers.

The procession ended at about 4:30 p.m. and participants, said to be thousands began to disperse stretching over about three kilometres from the meeting point, before soldiers attacked them.

Soldiers allegedly confronted volunteers managing traffic at the PZ Junction on the criteria they were using to give priority pass to cars.

The truck in which the soldiers were driving was allowed to pass only for them to start shooting at protesters indiscriminately.

The IHRC said: “This appears to have been a smokescreen for the attacks, because even as they were being given priority passage, the soldiers started shooting at demonstrators from a very close distance. Ishaq Abdullah was shot and bundled into the army vehicle. The soldiers then sped off, went around the block of shops and cut off a large group who were at the tail end of the procession from the main body. They took positions near these shops and started to shoot at the crowd. The volunteers and other non-partisan eye-witnesses stated that the volunteers did not have weapons and did not instigate the violence.”

Last month, about 20 members of the sect were blown up in an bomb attack during a procession from Kano to Zaria.

A suspected suicide bomber who pretended to be part of the procession set off a bomb at Dakasonye village in Garun Mallam Local Government of Kano State.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the attack and called the Shi’ttes heretics, but El-Zakzaky said his group knew those behind the attack.

“We know the names of the contractors and those contracted to commit the massacre, their identity is not hidden from us. Therefore we cannot be cowed by an imaginary Boko Haram tale, let them tell it to the fools and the ignorant. They should know that they are dealing with those with foresight, wisdom and intelligence, and above all with the real religion,” he said.

“There is nothing like a suicide bomber. They torture and drug unsuspecting captives and made them carriers of the explosives which they detonated amidst people.
