    Toyota to recall 15,000 vehicles

Toyota has begun moves to recall about 15,000 of its vehicles with faulty Takata airbags for them to be replaced with the improved life-saving gadgets in Ghana.

The vehicles affected include some Toyota models made from 2002 to 2014. Those vehicles may have airbags that are likely to explode when deployed, causing injury or even death.

About 16 deaths have been recorded worldwide following the defect.

    The models are IMV Hilux (2003 to 2014); IMV Fortuner (2003 to 2014); Avensis (2003 to 2008); Yaris (2006 to 2008); Corrola (2002 to 2014) and RAV4 (2003 to 2005) models.

Speaking at the 2017 Toyota Users Conference in Accra last Thursday, Toyota Ghana Executive Director Dr Eric Darko, said the company had so far replaced about 2,500 of the faulty airbags.

According to him, his outfit had a list of all those who bought vehicles with the airbag challenge from it and was calling the customers involved one after the other to have the problem fixed.

He, however, said the company was willing to change the airbags of even those who did not buy their vehicles from it for free.

“The only thing is if you have any car like that, let us know, if it is one of those cars that have been affected, we have an international system. We would check and replace it for free.

“We have some cars that have been in the system for a long time and it is believed that over time, the airbags functionality may not perform very well because of a number of factors, including heat. You just bring it and we will change the airbag system,” he said.

  • 15 get Dangote Academy placement

Fifteen students drawn from the five technical colleges in Lagos State are to undergo an 18-month training under the junior technician scheme at the Dangote Academy in Osogbo.

The 15 trainees were the best among 524 from the colleges, who sat for a selection examination recently.

Congratulating them, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB), Mr Olawumi Gasper, said the training is a rare opportunity.

“This is a rare opportunity for you, which you won’t appreciate. We put this together for you to go for intensive training in your area of specialisation and any of you might one day become the Managing Director of any of the Dangote Companies like the cement, sugar, refinery etc. There are so many students with first degrees out there, but today, you have that opportunity which will not stop your education because you are almost the first set to go through the German system of education,” he said.

Gasper, an engineer and former Rector of Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), added that the students would be absorbed automatically into the Dangote Company after the training and urged them to comport themselves well for other students coming behind to enjoy such benefit.

“As a senior colleague, I am assuring you that you will be employed automatically once you are through with your training at Osogbo and you can be taken to Accra, Angola etc anywhere where we have Dangote Company.

“I will like to implore you all not to misuse this opportunity for others coming behind to also benefit from it. You are the first batch, and we still have a second batch of 30 and a third batch of 20.

“Please behave well and form a strong bond so that they can continue to recruit from Lagos State. I’m happy you all did well and I believe you will make us proud,” he said.

The students’ leader, Paul David, who is going to study Welding and Fabrication said: “On behalf of my colleagues, I am saying thank you and we promise to behave well, do as you have advised and make you proud.”

  • 15 injured as students arrest suspected robber

No fewer than 15 students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso, Oyo State narrowly escaped death on Saturday when a bus in which they were taking a suspected robber to police station skidded off the road.

The accident occurred on Owode road, a few kilometres to Owode Ogbomoso Police State, where they were taking the suspect. It was learnt that the students sustained injuries after the Students’ Union bus summersaulted five times.

The suspect whose name could not be ascertained was caught while breaking into a female hostel in Adenike area. He was stripped naked by students, who accused him of raping his victims. Students used all kinds of material to hit the suspect before Students’ Union leaders arrived at the scene to stop their colleagues. They decided to hand him over to the police.

CAMPUSLIFE gathered that the suspect struggled with the students in the vehicle on their way to the station, resulting into a crash. The accident sparked a protest by students.

Fawole Isreal, a student, who witnessed the incident, said: “The suspect was caught in Adenike area of the campus as he broke into a room. He was rescued by Students’ Union officials from the crowd that wanted to lynch him. The union leaders pleaded with the crowd to take the suspect to the police station. On the way, the suspected robber struggled with the student in the bus and that resulted in an accident. The bus tumbled about five times. The students were injured.”

The students led the suspect to the palace of the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewunmi. The protest was led by the union president, Ajibola Areo, and another student, Sheriffdeen Bolarinwa. The protesters complained about criminal activities around the campus.

It took the intervention of the school authorities to calm the aggrieved students, who refused to hand over the suspect to the police.

Policemen at Owode Ogbomoso Police Station assured the students of justice.
