  • Presidential poll: Balewa’s son steps down for Jonathan

Son of Nigeria’s late Prime Minister and presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abduljalil Tafawa Balewa, has stepped down for President Goodluck Jonathan.

In a dramatic move, Balewa, who participated in the presidential screening exercise at the party’s secretariat on Wednesday, decided to withdraw from the race after he had gone through the screening exercise.

“I have decided to withdraw my aspiration for the strength and well being of the party. I am a strong PDP member and I will continue to work for the progress of the party,” Balewa announced.

The chairman of the screening committee, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, who had earlier announced Balewa’s decision to withdraw from the race, commended the aspirant’s decision.

Ali said: “After going through 90 minutes that the screening exercise lasted, he came to the conclusion that he wanted to withdraw from the race.

“He has promised to do everything to ensure the success of the party at the poll. We commend him for the decision, although he chose to go through the entire process of screening before deciding to withdraw.”

    Tambuwal collects APC governorship form

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambawal, on Friday collected his governorship nomination form at the Sokoto State office of the All Progressives Congress with a resolve that if given the mandate, he will continue from where Governor Aliyu Wamakko stops.

The Speaker and other lawmakers were on Thursday locked out from the National Assembly complex by policemen that invaded the place.

Tambawal, decked in his usual complete white attire, stormed the party office accompanied by lawmakers and associates to formally pick the form.

Looking untroubled, the Speaker while speaking during the presentation of the form, assured that he would ensure collectivity and team work for the development of the state.

He said: “My presence here today is in response to call by the good people of Sokoto State for me to come back home and serve them in the capacity of governor and I formally present myself as an aspirant and to purchase an expression of interest form for governorship election.

“I also assure that if given the mandate, we shall carry everyone along and in tune with the value system by ensuring the peace and stability of Sokoto State.”

He described Wamakko’s spirit of political resilience and cohesion as one of a true and competent leader who has done commendably well by offering himself for service to the people of the state.

“We and the entire north are proud of you,” Tambuwal stated.

  • 2015: Adamawa APC adopts Atiku as presidential candidate

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State has adopted former vice president Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate for the February 15, 2015 election, just as it said that its doors remain open to other aspirants interested in campaigning in the state.

The Chairperson of the APC in the state, Hon. Binta Garba, said at a news conference in Abuja that even though the party in the state has adopted the former vice president as its candidate, it is not closing the door to other aspirants.

She dismissed the consensus option in the selection of the party’s presidential candidate, saying it was undemocratic to do so.

Justifying their choice of Atiku as the party’s presidential candidate, she said, “the former vice president is not just a son of Adamawa State. The Turaki Adamawa is well-known and well-respected across the six geopolitical zones of our great country, Nigeria. His marriage and business ties cut across tribe and tongue, as do his philanthropy and social obligations. Sadly, in the deeply-divided Nigeria we have today, few politicians can make such a claim.

“We are proud of the outstanding leadership role Atiku Abubakar has played in this country over the past 15 years of democracy, both within and outside government. He has been a bridge-builder, stepping in during times of discord to mediate peace within and outside the APC.

“Without antagonism or malice, he has consistently lent his voice to pressing national issues, offering counsel to the Federal Government at times when those at the top were clueless about what steps to take.  He is a leader with a difference. He is also a man of the people.

“Without the least meaning to diminish his national and global stature, it is on the records that Atiku as an individual has done more to develop Adamawa State than any indigene of the state that is living or dead. His university, the American University of Nigeria has put our state and the whole country on the world’s map of quality education.

“Next to the state government, he ranks as the highest employer of labour through his many businesses and industrial establishments. We are equally thrilled by his commitment to job creation, improving the economy, education, infrastructure, transparency in government and the overall welfare of Nigerians.”

  • 2015 poll: President may not bow to PDP governors

2015 poll: President may not bow to PDP governors

President Goodluck Jonathan may not bow to the wishes of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors who are trying to hijack the 2015 polls nominations, it was learnt yesterday.

Jonathan and PDP are working on alternatives which the governors might pick from to allow peace to reign in the party.

It was gathered that the Presidency and the party will checkmate the excesses of some of the governors to avoid going to the 2015 general elections with a divided house.

The President summoned PDP senators to an emergency meeting at the Presidential Villa last night.

One of the options on the table to pacify senators is a recommendation by Senate President David Mark that the party should either retain two senators per state, or at worst, one PDP senator in each state.

The President and the PDP are worried that governors have decided to nominate their successors, seek senatorial tickets, influence choice of National and State Assembly members, and determine ministerial nominees and board appointees if the President is re-elected in February.

But the President and his strategists have concluded that the governors cannot have their way because it would amount to surrendering the party’s structure to them.

A source in the Presidency said: “What the governors are saying is that they want a figure-head President and would be in control of party structure. In a democracy, it does not work out this way.

“The thinking of the Presidency is that any outgoing governor can choose between picking his successor and going to the Senate. Also, governors seeking second term will have to stay away from nomination processes for other elective and appointive offices. All other elective posts and appointments will be determined by the President after consultations with the party leadership.

“We have reached a level that we must give the governors alternatives to choose from. This is what the President and PDP will do.”

2015: Jonathan to collect nomination form at 2PM

President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to collect the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential nomination form at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja at 2PM on Thursday.

According to a statement issued by his media aide, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President will make the stipulated payment and collect the party’s Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the 2015 presidential elections.

He will be received at the PDP Headquarters by the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, its National Organising Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha and other members of the party’s National Working Committee.

“Once again, the President thanks all the persons, groups and communities who have contributed funds for the forms and his coming campaign expenses.

“He also acknowledges other donors who have sent in their contributions since the initial list was published yesterday,” the statement said.

  • 2015 poll:  APC ready to restore hope to Nigerians, says Odigie-Oyegun

2015 poll:  APC ready to restore hope to Nigerians, says Odigie-Oyegun

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chief John Odigie-Oyegun yesterday said the party will restore hope to traumatised Nigerians once it is elected to power next year.

He said APC believes that Nigeria can be great again if competent leadership and a determined followership work together.

He said the difference between APC and the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) is good performance by APC governors and leaders at all levels  warning the PDP against using religion to divide Nigeria

Oyegun gave the ray of hope in an address at the party’s Extra-Ordinary National Convention at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja.

He said: “Now, our party, the APC, truly cares; we care about our citizens. We care about our youths. We care about our elderly. We are ready to restore hope to our traumatised people. We are programmed to return Nigeria to the path of growth and development, create jobs, modernise infrastructure and make life more abundant for our people.

“For those who say there is no difference between us and the other party, simply tell them that wherever APC is in government, services run efficiently and lives are saved.

“ Take, for instance, the success stories of the governments of Lagos and Rivers states that successfully halted the outbreak of Ebola that could have devastated the entire country.

“Through strong management and coordination of services from the tracking and quarantining of those who had come in contact with Ebola victims to the sealing of medical facilities, the Ebola epidemic was contained and the many lives that would have been lost without such firm, timely and decisive actions were saved.”

The chairman pleaded with Nigerians to give APC a chance to effect change  in 2015 to save the nation.

“Today, our people are more divided along ethnic and religious lines than at any other time in her history. Just because they want to win elections at all cost, they have pitched Christians against Muslims, Southerners against Northerners, and one ethnic group against the other.

To Odigie-Oyegun the manner in which two APC states managed the Ebola outbreak enough proof to Nigerians that APC has the antidote to the nation’s problems.

He said: “The secret of the success of the two APC states in handling of the Ebola crisis was majorly because the two governments had learnt lessons from the outbreak of the virus in other countries and had already put in place emergency planning and preventive measures to tackle the outbreak.

We must not forget that the success recorded in the two APC states was only possible because both state governments had previously in their visionary manners invested in local health infrastructure, including building networks of clinics and hospitals, recruiting and training medical personnel. Nigeria is today free of Ebola and, by God’s grace, it will be free of PDP by February 14, 2015.”

He said the PDP has resorted to divisive politics because it has nothing to show to Nigerians to return to power in 2015.

His words: “Now, the only reason the PDP has resorted to dangerous, divisive politics is because they have nothing to showcase to Nigerians to convince them to return the PDP to power at the centre come next year.

”In all spheres of life, Nigeria is worse off today than it was in 1999, when the PDP first assumed office.

“In the area of security and welfare of the citizenry, the main reason for the existence of any government, the scorecard of the PDP-controlled Federal Government is zero.

“ More Nigerians have died needlessly between 1999 and now than at any other time in the country’s history, minus during the unfortunate civil war of 1967 to 1970. By President Jonathan’s own admission, over 12,000 people have been killed by Boko Haram alone! Yet the government has no clue as to how to end the killings, not minding that the sponsors of terrorists called Boko Haram are known to the President and he is known to them.

“In the area of corruption, Nigeria has never had it so bad! Organised stealing of our crude oil has become a thriving business, and corruption has never been so institutionalised. Where do we start?”

The APC cautioned the Presidency against impunity and muzzling of the Judiciary.

Odigie-Oyegun said: “There is also impunity, unprecedented impunity, which has in turn fuelled unparalleled lawlessness. Now, they simply deploy security personnel to lock up the courts just to prevent justice from being served. They organise to beat up judges just to have their way. Litigants and lawyers are fair game in their misplaced strategy to pervert the course of justice. To them, the doctrine of the separation of powers is a mere fancy. They don’t give a damn. In their perverted reasoning, might is right! Their violation of this doctrine flies in the face of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This undemocratic encroachment and erosion portend great danger for our nation and constitute a threat to our democracy. But they don’t really give a damn.”

He asked PDP to stop mouthing the creation of phantom 1.7million jobs.

Odigie-Oyegun  said: “Neither do they give a damn about the future of our youths. In December 2013, the National Bureau of Statistics said 54% of Nigerian youths were unemployed in 2012.

  • 2015 poll: Umar raises alarm over excessive borrowing by governors for campaign

2015 poll: Umar raises alarm over excessive borrowing by governors for campaign

A former Military Governor of Kaduna State, Col. Abubakar Dangiwa Umar (rtd), yesterday raised the alarm over excessive borrowing from banks by some governors to campaign for the 2015 poll.

He also accused some governors of selling off assets, including shares, belonging to their states.

Umar, who made his feelings known in a statement in Abuja, asked the anti-corruption agencies to intervene because legislatures in the affected states had been caged by these governors.

The statement said: “It has become necessary to alert the nation to a dangerous trend, indeed an explosive scheme, by which some state governors are mortgaging the future of their states through excessive borrowing from commercial banks and other financial institutions to finance projects of dubious viability.

“The motive is entirely unclear. But one suspects it is either to fraudulently acquire campaign funds as the 2015 elections approach or retirement benefits.

“Some of them are also desperately selling off state’s assets, including shares and other long term investments.”

Umar appealed to anti-graft agencies to stem the tide of unjustifiable borrowing by some governors.

He added: “In a situation where state legislatures have  reduced themselves to all, but an arm of the executive, it is unrealistic to expect them to check and stop this fraud.

“We, therefore, appeal to the anti corruption agencies to intervene.”

He advised banks to live up to the ethics of their sector by checking some of these governors.

He said: “We also warn banks to desist from connivance with those governors. They need to be reminded of their civic responsibility and banking ethics to protect helpless public.

“They must be aware that most of these states have already lost the capacity to meet their financial obligations due to huge debt burden and diminishing revenue.

“The bankers must not forget that,  in the past, collapse of oil prices in the world market has often led  to widespread collapse of Nigerian banks because they  never learned to say ‘no’  to prodigal but cash-strapped state governments in such critical periods.”

  • Eight Dickson’s aides resign for 2015

About eight political appointees in Bayelsa State have resigned their appointments to contest for various offices on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 elections.

The Nation gathered that persons who abandoned their offices had indicated interests to contest for the various seats in the state and national assemblies.

Among persons said to have announced their resignations were the Commissioner for Education, Mr. Salo Adikumo and the Chief of Staff, Bayelsa House, Abuja, Chief Dikivie Ikhiogha.

They reportedly opted out on Monday.

Others were Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Mr. Fred Agbedi who was said to have submitted his resignation to the office of the Secretary to the State Government and the Commissioner for Local Government, Mr. Maitama Obodo.

It was also gathered that the Director-General of the Due Process Bureau, Mr. Joshua Ogore, as well as three senior special assistants and a special adviser had resigned from their posts.

  • Lamido not fit to rule Nigeria – Clark

Lamido not fit to rule Nigeria – Clark

The Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has been advised to shelf his presidential ambition because he is not  good enough to succeed President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Ijaw national leader, Chief Edwin Clark, who stated this on Thursday, also warned the governor to abstain from making further comments against President Jonathan, describing him as a “corrupt public officer.”

Clark, who spoke at his Kiagbodo country home, Burutu council area of Delta State, also blamed Governor Chibuike Amaechi for the crisis of interest between himself and the President, describing the governor  as a recalcitrant fellow.

He, however, gave a ray of hope on possible reconciliation between the duo, saying works were on to readopt the governor back into the “fold”, saying “he is one of us.”

Dismissing Lamido’s presidential ambition as unrealistic, the former federal commissioner described President Jonathan’s re-election bid as a valid ambition, due the people of the Niger Delta.

“Lamido should not speak, if he has not been enjoying immunity, he should have been arrested for meddling with the funds of Jigawa State with his children. His children stole Jigawa’s money, billions of naira, he’s a signatory to some of those accounts, but because he’s enjoying immunity, nobody has spoken. He’s not the fit and proper person to govern Nigeria.

“Apart from the fact that Jonathan has another four years, Lamido is not qualified to be president of Nigeria. One, educationally, he is not qualified. Nigeria is made up of very qualified people, let him tell me what his qualifications are. Aminu Kano was the one who brought him up, tell me what his qualifications are to take over from someone who has a PhD, who has been a lecturer, who has been a governor, who has been a deputy governor. The arrogance must stop,” he said.

Restating his earlier comments on the waiver granted former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Chief Clark, said the former anti-graft czar is not an asset, but a liability to the ruling party in Adamawa State.

“Ribadu is not a stable man and I have said it openly at a press conference and an open letter to the national chairman that Ribadu is a political liability, I have said that Ribadu cannot win any election,” he said.
