  • Be professional, INEC tells election observers

Dr Rufus Akeju, the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, on Thursday advised election observers in the state to exhibit the highest level of integrity and professionalism in the discharge of their duties during the general elections.

Akeju gave the advice while briefing accredited election observers and party representatives in Akure.

The REC noted that an election monitor has some level of lawful authority over the conduct of elections and officials unlike observers.

According to him, a monitor is a duly authorised personnel of INEC while an observer is independent and writes reports to his organisation and the commission.

Akeju said that the clarification was imperative to avoid occurrences that could result in misunderstanding and confusion during the elections.

“Under no circumstance should observers handle election documents in the polling station or physically assist the voting or counting process,” Akeju said.

  • Zamfara: Agbakoba questions AGF’s letter to INEC

A former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) president Dr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) has urged Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN) to withdraw the letter asking the Independent National Electoral Commission  (INEC ) to postpone election in Zamfara State.

The AGF asked INEC to postpone the election to enable the All Progressives Congress (APC) field candidates in the state.

INEC barred APC from fielding contestants for failing to meet up with the deadline for submission of candidates.

Agbakoba argued that if anyone was to make the postponement request, it should be the APC, not the AGF.

He said: “I am shocked by your letter to INEC on the above subject. You are the Attorney-General of the Federation and not the Attorney-General of INEC.

“INEC is an independent institution and cannot take directives from the Federal Government.

“If there is need for the postponement of the Zamfara State election as indicated in your letter, the proper person to request the postponement is the APC.

“In any case, Sections 38 and 39 of the Electoral Act 2010 which your request is based on have nothing to do with postponement of elections.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has at various fora undertaken that the Federal Government will not interfere with INEC. Your letter puts that commitment to question. It is my hope that this letter will be immediately withdrawn.

  • Kwara retirees, pensioners restate commitment APC’s victory

    ….Pledge 100,000 votes

Pensioners and retirees in Kwara state have said they are irrevocably committed to the success of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in this week Saturday’s and March 2nd general elections.

They also pledged APC would garner nothing less than 100,000 votes from them in the state.

Chairman of the Concerned Retired Kwara state Civil Servants, Alhaji Mohammed Abioye spoke this Thursday in Ilorin, the state capital during an interaction with Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed.

Alhaji Abioye said that “it needs be mentioned that we have come together in order to join hands with other well-meaning Kwarans who have been working to put a stop to the downward socio-economic development of the state due to poor governance in all ramifications especially since 2003 till date.

“We are concerned because this ugly trend has come about because the civil service which is supposed to be the engine room of government has been largely bastardised. The reason for this ugly trend is traceable obviously to poor service condition, lack of respect and regards for the service and its personnel both serving and retired.”

He said: “We must not allow this ugly trend to continue. We need to work with other progressively minded Kwarans to terminate the current political dynasty that is the major promoter of the various governments whose output has made our state the headquarters of poverty in Nigeria.

“In this respect, we urge all retired and service civil servants in the state to ensure safe custody of their permanent voter’s cards (PVCs), disregard the fake memorandum of understanding (MoU) recently signed between the state government and some labour leaders and come out en-mass February 16th and March 2nd 2019 to vote for APC
    candidates.”

He urged APC governorship candidate to be prepared to right all the wrongs already identified if voted in to power.

In a remark, information and culture minister urged the people to come out and vote massively come February 16th.

Alhaji Mohammed said the attention of the entire Nigeria and international community is focused on Kwara state in the forthcoming elections.

The minister added that “this Saturday election is very vital for the sacking of Bukola Saraki from the state’s politics. It is the most important so that before the dawn of Monday Bukola Saraki would have been sent packing from the state.”

  • Atiku’s presidency will attract investment, says Saraki

Senate President Bukola Saraki said on Thursday that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar’s administration will attract investment and generate employment.

He added that former vice president’s background as a private sector man stands him in good stead.

Saraki, who is the Director General of the PDP campaign said that the administration of Alhaji Abubakar would be youth driven.

Speaking at the Kwara Central youth town hall meeting in Ilorin, Saraki said that PDP cabinet would give 40 per cent inclusion to Nigerian youth if brought to power on Saturday.

Saraki, who answered questions from the youth on various issues ranging from economy, education and empowerment, said that they should not make the wrong choice of electing those that do not understand the
dynamics of business and private sector.

He said that Atiku Abubakar has private sector background that is capable of attracting investment and generating employment.

Said he: “Saturday is a date with destiny. You should not be intimidated by presence of security agents. They will be there to provide security and protection to you. With your support, we will win and cause a turnaround in our national life. In 2015, number of unemployed people was 10 million, and it’s now 23 million.

“The present administration does not understand how to cause change in people and economy. We all know government cannot provide job for everyone. It is the private sector that will do it. So, I want you to
go out on Saturday and elect Atiku that understands private sector.

Don’t make the mistake of voting for those that do not understand the dynamics because wrong choice can spell doom for the country.

“We are no seasonal politicians that only reach out to you during elections. We’ve been with you all the time, providing infrastructure, health, education and empowerment.”

Also speaking, the director general of the PDP campaign in the state, Prof Abubakar Sulaiman, said that the essence of the meeting with the youth was to correct some impression against the Senate President and elucidate achievements made so far to improve the welfare of the people.

Sulaiman said that the youth should not be dissuaded to vote for politicians that would not be able to provide dividends of democracy to them, saying that they should vote in the Senate President to retain the number three seat in the state with attendant opportunities.

The event was attended by youth groups like artisans, professionals, people with disabilities students, among others.

The town hall meeting was at the instance of the Directorate of Youth Affairs, Mandate 2019 Campaign Organisation headed by Ben Duntoye.

The Senate President re-echoed his message to the youths at another session with women from Kwara central at the Metropolitan Square, Ilorin.

He told the women who filed out in their thousands not to be intimidated by the heavy presence of security operatives, but should come out on Saturday and vote massively for Atiku and all the candidates of the PDP.

  • Thousands troop out in Katsina for Buhari’s campaign

Thousands of APC supporters have taken over Katsina, the Katsina State capital, awaiting the arrival of President Muhammadu Buhari for his campaign rally in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that some of the supporters who arrived the city on Wednesday slept on the streets in spite of the cold weather.

There are reports that the Muhammad Dikko Stadium, venue of the rally, was already filled to capacity.

Already vehicle owners have to park five to ten kilometres away to trek to the campaign ground due to congestion as a result of massive human and vehicular movement.

Buhari is expected to wind up his campaign this Thursday in Katsina from where he will proceed to Daura to cast his vote in the presidential election on Saturday in which he is a candidate.

There are also reports of massive hold up on roads leading to the state capital through Jibia, Batsari, Kaita, Daura, Mani, Dutsinma and Kankia, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters come in from across the 34 local government areas in the state.

So far, there has been no report of any security breach, as police, military and para military personnel keep vigil in strategic locations.

NAN observed that traders were making brisk business, even as hundreds of APC supporters move round the city chanting praises of the president.

  • Southwest youth scores Buhari high

The South West Youth Forum (SWYF) has passed a vote of confidence on President Muhammadu Buhari to continue with the reform of the country.

Coordinator of SWYF Biola Ottun-Coker, who addressed reporters after its meeting in Lagos, said the President surpassed expectations.

According to him, SWYF members in Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, Oyo, Osun and Lagos states reviewed the state of the nation and found Buhari to be the most competent hand among the Presidential candidates.

He said: “The forum took a critical look at the performance of the President Muhammadu Buhari -led administration in the country on issues confronting our democracy and then resolved to support him.

“The problem of Nigeria political system is not the political parties but of individual players who are found of changing parties because of their primordial, selfish interest.

“Corruption has eaten deep into the fabric of the nation that if we do not kill corruption, corruption will kill the nation. As we can see, corruption is fighting back whilst the present government is tackling the menace headlong.

Ottun-Coker added that Buhari’s three points programmes on security, economy and fighting corruption are making great impact in an unprecedented way.

“He just completed Ibadan-Lagos –Abeokuta rail-line which past administration failed to accomplish for years is emphatic demonstration of the Federal government’s commitment to building a better Nigeria.

“Mr. President is leading the corruption fight by example which is the height of leadership. The administration might have little shortcomings but interestingly such problems are being addressed with vigor and commitment.

“We therefore condemned in its totality the purported endorsement of Atiku, the Presidential candidate of the PDP by the Afenifere group but applauded the endorsement of Buhari by the Afenifere being anchored by Pa Ayo Fasanmi.

“We acknowledged that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu remained a leading voice of Yoruba, his patriotism and forthright leadership remains unparalleled in our present political history,” he said.

  • Obey Appeal Court judgement on Zamfara, APC tells INEC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately enlist its candidates in Zamfara state for the general election which begins on Saturday in compliance with the judgement of the Sokoto division of the Court of Appeal.

The court had dismissed an appeal against the judgement of the High Court of Zamfara state ordering the commission to accept the list of candidates presented to it by the party.

National Legal Adviser of the party, Babatunde Ogala told newsmen after a meeting between the Deputy National Chairman, South, Otumba Niyi Adebayo the Zamfara state governor, Abdulaziz Yari and his Ekiti state counterpart, Kayode Fayemi that even if INEC was right in obeying only the pronouncement of the Federal High Court in Abuja which made no order, there is a judgement of a superior court now which the commission must obey.

Ogala said “We all know the tragerary of the Zamfara matter where despite having a positive order of court asking INEC to accept the list of our candidates from a properly held, conducted, supervised and observed primary by INEC, it still said, in its opinion because there was a conflicting order of court of coordinate jurisdiction refused to accept our candidates.

“Let me emphasis that the court in Abuja did not make any order. The only order was from the High Court in Zamfara. Some people in their wisdom, appealed the decision of the High Court in Gusau. That is the matter that now went on appeal and the Court of Appeal in Sokoto has now dismissed the appeal and affirmed the decision of the Zamfara state High Court which upheld that the APC had a legitimate primary and that INEC should accept the list of our candidates.

“Let us assume, though not conceding that INEC was right in saying it had two conflicting orders of court of coordinate jurisdiction and choose to accept the one that made no order as against the one that had a positive order, now we have a judgement of a higher court which has now affirmed the decision of the Zamfara state High Court compelling INEC to accept our list of candidates and we are hopeful that INEC will comply with the order of court and have our candidates on the ballot.”

Asked if the party planned to hold any meeting with INEC on the issue, Ogala said “there is nothing like having to meet with INEC. What we owe who was a respondent in the matter is to forward a copy of the judgement of the Court of Appeal to INEC even though they are already aware, so that they will reflect the names of our already submitted candidates on the ballot for the elections”

Also speaking, Zamfara state governor, Abdulaziz Yari said the people of the state were grateful to God for the judgement, stressing that INEC should follow the part of honour and obey the judgement of the court of Appeal.

Yari said “I give thanks to God in whose infinite mercies, this judgement came up. If the judgement had been to the contrary, it would have been different. But the Court dismissed the appeal and affirmed the judgement of the High Court. You know what that means. We are happy with the outcome and we are here to work with the party to convey the enrollment order to INEC and to ensure that they comply with the order.

“Even if the two judgments from the high court were conflicting, we now have the judgement of a superior court and we except INEC to comply and now follow the part of anarchy or go against the laws of the land. So, we believe strongly that INEC will comply.

  • Breaking: APC members in Rivers block INEC headquarters

… insist electoral commission must obey Court of Appeal ruling to relist party, candidates

Thousands of protesting members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, from 8 a.m. today, blocked the main entrance of Rivers headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Aba Road in Port Harcourt, insisting that the electoral commission must obey the ruling of Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt and relist the main opposition party in the state (APC) and its candidates.

The aggrieved protesters, who were armed with placards bearing various inscriptions and chanting: “No APC, no elections in Rivers State,” were led by the party’s candidate for Rivers Southeast Senatorial District, Oji Ngofa, who is Nigeria’s Ambassador to The Netherlands.

INEC’s Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Mr. Edwin Enabor, addressed the protesters and he informed them that the Resident Electoral Commission (REC) in Rivers, Mr. Obo Effanga, had not got to the office.

Ngofa, however, insisted that he and other APC members would not leave, until their protest letter was personally handed over to the REC of INEC in Rivers, for onward transmission to the National Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

The protesters were still in front of INEC office, with the gate still blocked, as at press time.

  • Buhari’ll win with or without your votes, Ubah tells Ndigbo

The senatorial candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra South, Senator Andy Ubah, has stated President Muhammadu Buhari will win Saturday’s poll with a landslide with or without the votes of Ndigbo.

He said it was better the Igbos cast their votes for Buhari as voting against him would not stop his victory at the poll.

Addressing party faithful on Wednesday at a rally in Nnewi, Ubah said the people of the zone should resist the mistakes of 2015 when APC was not voted for in the South East.

He said Ndigbo should have nobody to blame if they were not seen to have massively voted for Buhari and every other candidate of the party in the zone.

According to him: “It is obvious that President Muhammadu Buhari will be re-elected on Saturday. Whether you vote for him or not, he will win.

“It is unfortunate that during the last election in 2015, only 10 million votes were recorded for Buhari in the South East.

“But this time around, I want Anambra South alone to give him not less than 1 million votes.”

Candidate representing Nnewi North/South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituencies, Engr. Jude Onyeka said voting all APC candidates would guarrantee a team that would bring democracy dividends to the zone.

On his part, National Auditor of the party, Chief George Muoghalu asked party supporters not to be confused with money or any other gratification.

Other chieftains at the rally were the party’s deputy governorship candidate in 2017 in Anambra, Dozie Ikedife jnr, Nnewi North chairman, Tony Atuenyi as the host, Engr Forth Dike, J.C.Okeke, Omo Okeke, among others.

  • Attack on Buhari, Osinbajo treasonable, says Falana

Lawyer and activist, Femi Falana (SAN) has said that the stoning of President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo by supporters of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) during last Monday’s campaign of the All Peoples Congress (APC) in Abeokuta was treasonable.

Reacting to the ugly incident Wednesday, Falana expressed regret that the Police has not arrested anybody in connection with the attack on the President, his Vice and other leaders of the APC.

He said Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State cannot absolve himself of the blame as the chief security officer of the state.

He regretted that governor Amosun visited Abuja several times before last Monday’s campaign with the governorship candidate of the APM, Adekunle Akinlade, the President welcomed them to the villa.

He said the governor ought to have been told long before the campaign that his activities were anti-party.

The lawyer also blamed the various security agencies in the state for the incident noting that they did nothing to prevent or stop the attack on the President.

He said the security agencies, despite knowing that it was APC rally allowed another party and its supporters to infiltrate the venue.

Falana contended that this ugly situation persisted because Police and other security agencies that should be alive to their responsibilities did nothing about it.

He recalled that in 2007, when former President Olusegun Obasanjo openly canvassed support for Dr Olusegun Agagu against Dr Segun Mimiko.

He also recalled that some time ago, supporters of former Oyo state governor, Chief Rasheed Ladoja and Alao Akala clashed and six people died, the Police did not arrest nor prosecute anybody over the incident.

Falana lamented the spate of disrespect and other acts against the person of the President of the country by the opposition, describing it as an insult against his office.

He recalled that during presentation of the 2019 budget, when the president was booed by some members of the National Assembly, the only thing he said was that ‘the world is watching’, noting, “here in Abeokuta, he kept quiet and allowed the situation to degenerated”.

He said when the President was attending rally of the APC, similar incident happened in Port Harcourt, Rivers State and Imo State in particular where the state governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha was campaigning for Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) gubernatorial candidate, nobody was cautioned.
