  • Southwest Muslims endorse Buhari

A Muslim group in the South West, Trust Alliance Foundation for Change, (TAFC), has endorsed the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, President Muhammadu Buhari for re-election in the forthcoming general election.

Its Coordinator, Dr. Morufu Afolabi, said, the endorsement of Buhari from its part was hinged on the policy-driven and ethical government that has been entrenched in the country since the coming on board of the President and his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

At a news conference on Wednesday in Akure, the Ondo State capital with members from the south-west states, Afolabi berated the statement credited to the PDP candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on the alleged plan to sell off of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC) to his “friends”.

This he noted had revealed that the former Vice President cannot be trusted with governance.

He said “We base our decision to work and vote for the success of Buhari/Osinbajo in the forthcoming presidential election on the level of integrity and achievement in the fight against corruption, infrastructure development.

“We are convinced that the expected Modern Nigeria is achievable if we have the like of Buhari as Governors and Chairmen in all the 36 States and 774 LGAs in the federation.

Afolabi urged Nigerians, particularly the south-west electorate to ensure that President Buhari is re-elected during this month’s presidential polls, adding that the region would benefit more.

He said”Nigerians should look beyond Buhari/Osinbajo winning the 2019 Presidential Election and be more concerned about how to get similar credible candidates who will take over from them after expiration of their term in 2023.

The Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Wahab Adegbenro said “Buhari will win the election hands down as no credible candidate is available to defeat him.

“As regards PVC, we have sensitised the public on the need to obtain their PVCs as it is the only mean to determine who govern them. We have informed the public to shun vote buying as this could be disastrous to the survival of our nationhood.”

  • PDP coming to put smile on faces of Nigerians — Obi

Mr Peter Obi, Vice-Presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ), says that his party will bring back smiles to the faces of Nigerians when it wins the Feb. 16 presidential election.

Obi said this while addressing newsmen before embarking on a roadshow in Awka on Tuesday.

He said PDP would restore the country’s days of economic prosperity which had suffered set back under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

He said voting back the APC meant “prolonging the suffering in the land”.

According to him, the country is collapsing under the watch of incompetent and incapable people; come out en mass on Feb. 16 and vote out this the APC controlled-government.

“Nigeria has the highest number of poor people in the world today where about 90 millions are poor that is half of the population.

“About 21 million youths are unemployed, nobody is happy with situation in the country today and any person that is happy with the situation is not a normal human being.

“PDP is coming back to restore happiness and lessen the sufferings of the people,’’ he said.

Earlier, Mr Oseloka Obaze, Chairman of Atiku-Obi Presidential Campaign Council in Anambra, said the PDP was coming with positive ideas on how to rebuild Nigeria.

Obaze expressed confidence on the chances of PDP to win the presidential election, saying Nigerians need a new lease of life.

“PDP findings show that Nigerians are not happy with the present government of APC and re-electing them will worsen the sufferings of the people.

“If you vote for the present government to return, things will be worse than we had in the last three years and half.

“They made several promises in 2015 and they have not fulfilled any, we want to restore the economy and human dignity in the next four years,’’ he said.

Obaze said there was nothing to show that PDP governors in South-East were against the Atiku/Obi ticket as no one had come out openly to say he was not supporting it.

“The PDP governors in the South-East are solidly behind Atiku-Obi ticket, so there is no need to worry about,’’ he said.

  • How Buhari will win presidential poll, by Kalu

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and former governor of Abia State Dr Orji Kalu on Tuesday gave insights into how the winner of the February 16. 2019 election will emerge.

He said majority from Northern Nigeria would determine the winner.

According to Kalu, experience has shown that whoever clinches majority of the votes from that region always emerges President.

Speaking on departure to Abuja at a private hangar at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Kalu said with over 14.9 million votes already in his basket, it would be easier for Buhari to coast home to victory.

He affirmed with the infrastructural revolution embarked upon in the South Eastern region, the President will also shore up his electoral changes better than in 2015.

He said people of the region have come to realize that President Buhari , who was painted in different light, has shown more love for the Igbos through the many projected executed in the region.

He cited the payment of pension to Biafrian Soldiers and Police; payment of severance benefits to former workers of Nigeria Airways Limited; Nigerian Railway Corporation and massive road construction across the South East.

Kalu said Buhari will do well electorally in Anambra state with a projected 50 per cent of the votes cast; while he will pull over 35 per cent of votes cast in Enugu and 50 per cent in Ebonyi.

In Imo State, he predicted Buhari will pull 52 per cent and garner between 51 and 65 per cent in Abia State.

He cautioned the Igbo socio cultural organisation Ohaneze Ndi Igbo against turning the group into a political party because it does not have the mandate to tell Igbo people, which party or candidate to cast their votes for.

He said because Ohaneze comprises people of different political parties, it will be wrong for them to endorse Alhaji Abubakar Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its preferred candidate.

Kalu warned international community especially the European Union, United States and United Kingdom against interference in the presidential election.

He said as global stakeholders they should advise on how to achieve peace and transparent elections and allow Nigerian voters to determine their leaders through the polls .

  • Umeh refutes alleged N26m misappropriation

The senator representing Anambra Central District and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), in Feb. 16 poll, Chief Victor Umeh, has dismissed alleged misappropriation of N26 million belonging to the 109 electoral wards in the Senatorial district.

A group of aggrieved party members who were ward Chairmen when Umeh was National Chairman of the party between 2006-2015 had on Tuesday, accused the senator of misappropriating the sum.

The group known as G21 in a communique signed by its spokesmen, Mr. Leo Nwokoye, threatened to work against Umeh’s Senatorial ambition unless he returned the money to the wards.

They also claimed they were yet to be recognised by the APGA government in the State since 2015 despite all their contributions towards the sustenance of the party.

But reacting through his media aide, Emeka Odionu, Umeh insisted that his accusers were sponsored by his political enemies who were afraid of losing the election.

He wondered why such allegations would be leveled against him when he was not in charge of the party treasury.

He said, “There is no such money under my custody and I am neither the financial secretary nor the treasurer of the party to answer to the allegation.

“We all are aware of the antics of some people who are apprehensive about my winning the Febuary 16 Senatorial election and they’re trying everything possible to stop me.

“We know where they are coming from and they have failed in their plot because Anambra people have become wiser and they are not new to this desperate style of politics.

“My tenure as National Chairman produced a two-term governor of a state and also midwifed APGA to APGA transition from an out-going governor to the in-coming one.

“Such success stories could not have been told if I did all they’re alleging and I wish to urge the public to discountenance the allegation as it smacks name dropping and cheap black mail.”

While urging members of his constituency not to be distracted by paid agents, Umeh reassured his readiness to sustain effective representation of his district.

  • APC seeks postponement of Rivers gov poll

    • Says Wike is jittery

The deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in Rivers State, Chief Victor Giadom, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the February 16 and March 2 elections in Rivers in view of Monday’s ruling of the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt on stay of execution.

He also accused Rivers Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike of being jittery upon confirmation the governorship candidate of APC in the state, Pastor Tonye Cole and other candidates that emerged through indirect primaries supervised by members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, would participate in the elections.

Giadom stated these Tuesday in Port Harcourt in an exclusive interview with our reporter.

While assuring Cole and other candidates of APC would emerge victorious in the polls, he maintained that postponing Rivers elections would ensure the candidates and the electorate were not disenfranchised.

Rivers Commissioner for Information and Communications, Emma Okah, who doubles as the Director of Information and Communications of PDP Campaign Council, however maintained that Wike and other candidates of the ruling party were neither afraid nor jittery of main opposition APC’s candidates or candidates of other political parties, having campaigned extensively and fully prepared for the polls, thereby emerging victorious.

The appellate court presided over by Justice Ali Gumel granted the stay of execution of the judgment of Justice Kolawole Omotoso of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt on the fielding of candidates by the APC.

Giadom, the immediate past Deputy National Secretary of APC, said: “Wike is jittery, because of the strength of APC in Rivers State. That is why he teamed up with some enemies of democracy to ensure that our party (APC) is not on the ballot, but God has put all of them to shame. Wike made all efforts, including outside the law, to stop APC from fielding candidates in Rivers State.

“Wike and his allies must stop their propaganda and futile fights, but to prepare to meet candidates of APC in the field. APC will win 80 per cent of the votes cast in Rivers State in all the elections, because Rivers people are tired of Wike’s failed promises.

“I expect Wike and other members of PDP in Rivers State to enjoy the healthy competition of political context, so as to know who are the choices of the people of Rivers State, as against the attempts by Wike to shut the doors against APC.

“While thanking the judges of the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt for granting the stay of execution of the judgment of Justice Omotoso, we urge INEC, as a law-abiding institution, to do the needful by postponing Rivers elections, to ensure a level-playing field and in order to allow candidates of APC to adequately campaign as their counterparts in other political parties, who have been campaigning round Rivers State’s 23 LGAs for over two months. The postponement will be in the interest of Rivers people, especially APC members.

“I wish to urge Rivers people to believe in the APC, as the difference is very clear. We will continue to ensure quality leadership that will transform the entire Rivers State and ensure adequate protection of lives and property, thereby making the state a destination for investments.”

The deputy governorship candidate also berated a governorship aspirant on APC platform, Senator Magnus Abe (Rivers Southeast) for misinterpreting the ruling of the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, accusing him of mischief.

Giadom declared that Abe, from the same Bera-Ogoni in Gokana LGA of Rivers, was being economical with the truth, stressing that the former Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG) in the administration of Rotimi Amaechi, now Transportation Minister, ought not to speak differently from what was contained in the ruling of the appellate court.

He urged Nigerians to avail themselves with the ruling, in order not to be misled by individuals or groups, while calling on APC members and supporters in Rivers to take advantage of the ruling and return to active campaigns, so as to ensure victory in all the elections.

The deputy governorship candidate assured that members of Rivers APC were ready to receive President Muhammadu Buhari and members of his campaign team in Port Harcourt next week.

He said: “Rivers people should continue to support APC. We should ensure peaceful elections in Nigeria, especially in Rivers State. When Cole becomes governor and I as deputy governor, by God’s grace, Rivers State will experience massive transformation in all sectors. There will also be peace, security and commensurate development. We will bring back the lost glory of Rivers State.

“The Federal Government is doing a lot in Rivers State, particularly the construction of Bodo-Bonny Road, Ogoni clean-up, completion of the international wing of Port Harcourt International Airport and massive construction of roads through the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), among others. Wike’s propaganda should be ignored. Wike’s abysmal performance will end on May 29, 2019.”

Giadom also called on Nigerians to continue to support the Buhari’s administration and come out en-masse on February 16 to vote for him and other candidates of the party in all the elections.

  • 2019 poll: PDP urges security agencies to be neutral

The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus has admonished the nation’s security agencies to safeguard the unity of the country by being neutral in all their operations regarding the general elections.

The party chair said the PDP was in possession of credible intelligence that some security operatives were being hired by the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) to connive with some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to manipulate the election in their favour.

Secondus, who addressed a crowd of party supporters in Gusau, Zamfara State on Monday at the PDP presidential rally, said that there were still some good patriotic operatives who do their jobs professionally.

The party chairman advised the security operatives to be guided by the country’s constitution, saying that any bias roles from them in the coming elections could plunge the country into major crisis.

Prince Secondus said the endorsement of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar by the Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the Northern Elders Forum, the Pan Niger Delta Forum and leaders of the Middle Belt Elders Forum, showed clearly where the country was heading to in the upcoming elections.

He added that a PDP presidency will restore all the collapsed industries in Zamfara and other states, with a view to giving jobs to the people and ensuring adequate security.

Also speaking at the rally, Atiku told the crowd that he would give them the airport they requested for, adding however that what they needed most was peace and security, which he promised to address with all seriousness.
