  • 2019: Atiku picks Peter Obi as running mate

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has picked a former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi as his running mate.

The only official confirmation of the choice of Obi came from Mr. Ike Abonyi, the Media Adviser to the national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus.

Abonyi confirmed the report through a terse text message, stating “confirmed” without further comments.

A competent source in the Atiku camp had earlier confirmed the development to our correspondent on the telephone on Friday.

The source however pleaded not to be quoted because he did not have the mandate to speak on the matter.

“Yes, it is true that Mr. Peter Obi has been chosen to be Atiku’s running mate”, the source said emphatically without further comments.

The choice of Obi was said to be premised on the strong presence of the PDP in the South East zone where Obi hailed from.

Obi was elected governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014 on the platform of the All Progressive Gand Alliance (APGA).

He defected to the PDP in 2015, following a disagreement with his successor and protege, Mr. Willie Obiano who was also elected on the platform of APGA.

Attempts by Obi to frustrate Obiano’s reelection in 2017 failed as Obiano defeated Obi’s preferred candidate, Dr. Henry Obaze Oseloka of the PDP.

The choice of Obi was said to have been premised on the strong presence of the PDP in the South East zone. Three of the five states in the zone, Abia, Enugu and Ebonyi are under the control of the PDP.

Imo and Anambra are under the control of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the APGA respectively.

Incidentally, Anambra State where Obi hailed from is being controlled by APGA.

  • 2019: Buhari, Atiku set for battle

The emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in next year’s general elections, to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has elicited varied reactions from Nigerians. RAYMOND MORDI and MUSA ODOSHIMOKHE sought the views of some politicians and other observers on the development.

IF the reactions that have so far trailed the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in next year’s presidential election is anything to go by, the contest is likely to be an epic battle between him and incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Since Abubakar who is more popularly known as Atiku emerged as the PDP flag bearer, after defeating 11 other contestants in the party’s primary with 1,532 votes, the APC has tried to dampen the enthusiasm that greeted his triumph at the PDP National Convention in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, at the weekend, saying the development will make the President’s re-election easier. In a post she published on her Facebook page, the Special Adviser to the President on New Media, Lauretta Onochie, said: “Congratulations Alh. Atiku Abubakar. You have outspent the rest. You have a new toy. But believe it, it’s only a dream. You ran away from facing President Buhari in a primary, now you’ll meet him at the presidential elections. Ntor!”

But, observers believe that next year’s presidential election is not going to be a stroll in the park for President Buhari, contrary to the impression Onochie is trying sell to the public. This, they say, is because the circumstances surrounding the election differ sharply from that of the election that brought Buhari into power three and half years ago. For one thing, the observers argue that the two major candidates are from the North and as a result the idea of a bloc vote from that part of the country as witnessed during the last election is ruled out. For another, they insist that the coalition that brought the President into power has virtually collapsed and that three and half years after, the ruling party has failed to deliver the change that Nigerians voted for.

One of such respondents, Chief Chekwas Okorie, did a comprehensive analysis of the entrance of Atiku into the race to face incumbent President Buhari. The National Chairman of the United Progressives Party (UPP) said:  “I expect an epic battle; an epic battle in which the whole country will be the battleground. There will be nothing like the North and South divide anymore. The sentiment of the youth does not arise also, because the two of them are in their ‘70s. The issue of ethnicity does not arise too, because the two of them are Fulanis.

“Their acceptability or otherwise will now depend on the extent the candidates and their parties reach out to other blocs. Unfortunately, the Buhari campaign organisation does not appear to be proactive enough. This is unfortunate, because I have my soft spot for President Buhari; I have never hidden it. On the other hand, it appears Atiku is aware of this factor. The Atiku campaign has reached out to the extent that the President-General of Ohaneze has already congratulated the PDP candidate. This is wrong though, because Ohaneze ought not to show such partisan interest.

“That move can be countered, if the other group is proactive enough. They need to understand the Igbo political dynamics.

“Another factor that Atiku has going for him is the fact he has introduced restructuring into the campaign, even though restructuring is not in the PDP manifesto. There is also the fact that Atiku is married to an Igbo lady. So, all of these factors will gain ground, if the other party remains complacent and think it can handle things on its own.

“From all indications, the campaign will be very robust, issue-based and will require strategic alliances and coalition. The so-called small parties may not secure much votes during the election, but they have their relative strengths. The recent election in Osun State, where the APC nearly suffered a narrow defeat, is a pointer to what is expected in 2019. To avoid being disgraced during the supplementary election in seven polling units, the APC had to negotiate away 25 per cent of the incoming government.

“Besides, the recent statement of the President’s wife is also a danger signal for the APC to go back and do some soul-searching and put its house in order, to come up with something more political; rather than the current propaganda and rabble-rousing.”

On whether corruption would be a big issue, given the allegation against the PDP flag bearer, Okorie said the Buhari campaign organisation is likely to sustain its rhetoric on the issue, because “the anti-corruption fight is one major thing that has attracted international attention and good testimony for President Buhari across the globe”.

He said the corruption tag may or may not have the desired impact. His words: “The allegation of corruption being levelled against Atiku is within the helm of propaganda and speculation, because he has not been indicted by any court of law. To the best of my knowledge, he is not being prosecuted by the EFCC. But the fact that he was part of the 16 years of the PDP would also come into play.

“But there are also other factors that would influence the outcome of the election, such as the current liberal attitude and spirit of accommodation one has noticed in the PDP. On the other hand, we have witnessed so many events that hurt the internal cohesion within the APC in recent times. So, how the party intends to heal these wounds within the short time remaining is something the party’s strategists must seriously think about. So, as I said earlier, the APC needs to come out of its cocoon and be proactive and more strategic in its approach. I believe the party needs to build coalitions, among other things, ahead of next year’s general elections, to stand a chance of winning. In other words, the irregularities that have characterized APC primaries in various states across the nation is a danger signal for the party.”

The UPP National Chairman said he agrees with those that have described the 2019 presidential election as a referendum on the performance of the Buhari administration in the last three and half years. He said: “This is because the electorate would be looking at his achievements or otherwise during his tenure so far. So, it becomes a referendum in the sense that people who think he has done well would be voting yes, while those who believe that he has performed woefully would be voting no, by voting for another candidate. The alternative candidate may not necessarily be Atiku, but he remains a major contender.

“To a lesser extent, it could also turn out as a referendum on Atiku, because he was part of the Olusegun Obasanjo administration for eight years and there are certain things that are associated with that government that he cannot easily wash his hands off.”

On restructuring, the founding National Chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) believes it would become one of the major factors that would determine who wins the election. His words: “I know very well that restructuring and the agitation for autonomy by the federating units would be a major factor in the election. Political leaders, religious leaders, as well as cultural and traditional leaders would be interested in the way candidates would respond to these critical issues that affect the unity and economic development of this country.

“Looking at the two major parties, the APC has a semblance of devolution of powers in its manifesto, but unfortunately President Buhari has not shown any interest in that regard. The PDP, on the other hand, has nothing like that in their manifesto, but its presidential candidate has turned it to his campaign mantra. So, Nigerians must be careful in deciding who can be trusted in that regard.”

Okorie said any candidate that can arouse the political consciousness of the Igbo in 2019 can use it as a game changer. He said: “A game changer in the sense that there is no state in Nigeria that does not have the Igbo as the second largest ethnic group, after the indigenous ethnic group. That is an enormous potential. But what happened over the years is that they were somewhat political withdrawn or apathetic. But that is not the situation now. There is so much consciousness now and this reflected in their response to voter registration exercise.

“How each party approaches it will depend on its strategic thinking and initiatives. The Igbos are republican in nature, so they are not the type that would vote wholeheartedly in one direction. A lot of things will influence their voting pattern, but basically they are very concerned about the structure of Nigeria, about citizen rights across the country, and devolution of powers.

“On the issue of security, Igbo people believe that state and community policing would be a better arrangement in securing the nooks and crannies of the country, especially rural communities. So, how political parties present these issues to the electorate would matter a lot. The El-Rufai Committee of the APC did an extensive work on restructuring, but the President may have to change his attitude to the matter, if he wants to be taken seriously on it.”

A member of the PDP, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, is of the view that the party’s chances of winning next year’s general elections are bright, with the emergence of Atiku as its flag bearer.  His words: “I want to say that with the emergence of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar the chances of the PDP winning the election are very bright. We are going to defeat Buhari and the APC. But, I want to say that if Buhari and his group rig the election, that means they will be rigging Nigeria out of existence.

“Atiku has practical experience of the task before him; he is a very articulate businessman who is always determined in whatever he does. Therefore I have no doubt in mind that he will win the 2019 election.”

For the Publicity Secretary, Afenifere, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, the contest between Buhari and Atiku is going to be very interesting. He said: “They are both formidable candidates. Buhari has the power of incumbency, but Atiku is equally well prepared for the election. He is coming on his clear programme of restructuring Nigeria, which many regions of the country are currently agitating for. The two of them are also poles apart; given the fact that Atiku has proven that he is pro-business. He has done successful businesses, which the President cannot not boast of and where we are right now, we need a leader who can revive our business environment and put business life back to work; a leader that will encourage agro-business, as against condoning herdsmen and thereby not making the country conducive for farming activities to go on.

“The President in the last three and half years has proven to be a leader who does not have a broad mind. But Atiku is detribalized and broad-minded. He has friends all over Nigeria and is known all over the country. Clearly, it is going to be an exciting contest.”

Similarly, the founder of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC), Chief Fredrick Faseun, said going by the current mood in the country, Atiku stands a better chance of winning. He said: “Judging from the wishes and expectations of Nigerians who have been commenting on the emergence of both candidates, Atiku has better chances of clinching the trophy.

But, as far as Chief Ayo Afolabi, a chieftain of the APC, is concerned, Nigerians have made up their minds about what they want. He added: “That is making the country better for the people. We know that all that the PDP understands is how to distribute money to the electorate, but Nigerians have become wiser, if possible they will take their money and will not vote for them.

“We do not see Atiku as a threat. I don’t know where Atiku will get the votes to win, not even his region, the Northeast.”

In the same vein, the Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, also believes the emergence of Atiku as the PDP flag bearer is a good development for his political party. His words: “To pick Atiku, the chairman of all corrupt entities in Nigeria as presidential candidate of the PDP at a time when corruption is being fought left and right, front and back is an affront. It is slap on our faces and we will give the PDP a run for their money in the fullness of time.

  • 2019: I won’t surrender Ogun to ‘profiteers’, says Amosun

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has said he will not “surrender” the state to those he said desire to reap from where they did not sow.

The governor was reacting to the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary and next year’s general elections.

Amosun said he and his supporters were ready for those he called “profiteers” on the day of the party’s primary, whenever it takes place.

The governor, who made the remarks yesterday while addressing hundreds of APC members and supporters at the MTR Hall, Ibara, Abeokuta, the state capital, urged them to keep their “gunpowder dry” for the political battle ahead.

Amosun, who momentarily left the M. K. O. Abiola Stadium in Kuto, Abeokuta, venue of this year’s Independence Day anniversary celebration after cutting the 58th Independence anniversary cake, debunked the allegation of “security breach” by five APC governorship aspirants in the state.

The governor advised the people not to de-market Ogun State with allegations of security breaches.

He added: “Don’t worry because of them. This position we are today is by the benevolence of God. We are more now, I have told them; we have the government, we have the party and we have the people.

“They have been trying all the tricks in the book. They will have trouble having 10 or five per cent of the people. If they do it one million times, the result will be the same.  They thought they are God. But God, who dealt with them before, will harmer more this time. The disgrace they got last time (2015) will be more this time.

“Keep your gunpowder dry; we will mobilise you with the necessary logistics when the time comes. If they are doing kuru-kere (scheming), tell them that they will be graced. We are on the ground here. We will give you transport fare back.

“They have been writing something; nobody is going to kill anybody. If you have the love of Ogun State, don’t de-market it. Nobody will kill anybody. We are ready for them. I’m the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the state. Something is worrying their brain. We are waiting for them.

  • 2019: Buhari will be easy to defeat, Bafarawa

Former governor of Sokoto State and PDP presidential aspirant, Attahiru Bafarawa, has declared defeating APC- led administration of President Muhammadu Buhari will be an easy task if all the aspirants join hands with the party.

Bafarawa spoke on Friday in Kano while interacting with PDP state delegates.

He frowned at political bickering and attacks among PDP elders, saying it would affect the party if not addressed.

“There is no reason whatsoever to see some certain party elders fighting each other through media. Such can destabilise our collective unity and chances to defeat ruling APC.

“All such noise and threat among party leaders across board are meant to create disunity by some of whom are not happy with our current success in the country,” Bafarawa said.

He assured nothing will stop him from defeating other aspirants in the forthcoming national convention of the party.

He claimed he had the needed requisites to lead the party to success in the 2019 presidential election.

“I am not afraid. I will never see any of the aspirants as a threat to get our party ticket. I will surely defeat them and secure the mandate.

Kano state PDP chairman, Senator Mas’ud Doguwa assured Bafarawa of total support and endorsement of PDP Kano to realise his ambition of flying the party’s flag.

He said PDP Kano state belongs to genuine party supporters, not any individual adding that no one can intimidate or frighten them to succumb easily on issues in the state.

  • 2019: Who flies Sokoto APC’s flag?

Sokoto is one of the 19 states where the All Progressives Congress (APC) has opted for indirect primary to choose its governorship flag bearers for next year’s general elections. As the Northwest state gets ready for the exercise this weekend, a social and political commentator, Ridwan Nadabo, looks at the chances of the aspirants and how the party leader, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, will manage the crisis that may arise after the shadow poll.

SENATOR Aliyu Wamako’s political brinkmanship is about to be stretched to the limits, as he tries to resolve the knotty issue of who becomes the next governor of Sokoto State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This is because several of his god sons are locked in the struggle to succeed the incumbent Governor Aminu Tambuwal, also a former god son, who recently defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

With the governorship primary scheduled for this weekend, to select the candidate that will fly the party’s flag in the state, it remains to be seen how Wamako would handle what close political associates have described as a fierce political challenge.

The two most prominent aspirants among those that have lined up for the race are the serving Deputy Governor Ahmed Aliyu and Faruku Yabo. The duo belongs to the Wamako School of politics.

Other interested god sons, like Yusuf Suleiman and Abubakar Shehu Tambuwal, are said to have retreated to the backgrounds, having not received the nod from their godfather.

Aliyu and Yabo appear to be ahead in the scheming for the APC ticket and the contest may eventually be between them. Both Aliyu and Yabo served as commissioners under Wamako for eight years. Aliyu is currently the deputy governor.

So far, both of them have submitted their nomination forms and have been screened by the national headquarters of the party.

Many have tipped Aliyu to fly the party’s flag, because supporters of APC have unalloyed confidence that he would not disappoint them.  The Deputy Governor not only parades impressive academic credentials, he has also demonstrated rare loyalty to the people and leadership within the APC.

He has a record of serving as Finance Commissioner under Wamako for about eight years before becoming Tambuwal’s deputy. His three and half years in office as second in command to Tambuwal is seen by many as added advantage for him; having operated at very elevated level from the seat of power.

This, perhaps, explains why close watchers of the political succession game in Sokoto believe Aliyu has an edge over Yabo. The latter is qualified too for the plum job, but he does not possess the requisite work experience at such a high level in government.

Sources close to Wamako have also hinted that Aliyu might be his preferred option, because being an insider in Tambuwal’s administration, the new APC government that may be headed by him will be able to hit the ground running, because he already has idea about the workings of government.

Wamako is also believed to be eager to reward the Deputy Governor for his rare courage and loyalty shown to him and the party, by refusing to defect along with his former principal to the PDP.

It is also being argued that Aliyu, by the virtue of his position as Deputy Governor, is the most senior member of the APC in government after the defection of Tambuwal from the party. Therefore, it is expected that he should naturally assume the position as leader of the party in the state.

For Wamako, his preference for the Deputy Governor as natural successor to Tambuwal could not have been better explained, considering the fact that he has not only met all the criteria, but also because of his loyalty to the party.

Besides, it is being speculated that supporters of Yabo may have been compromised by the Tambuwal-led opposition who has been accused of being the sponsors of the crisis in the Sokoto chapter of the APC.

Those making this allegation claim that the sighting of Alhaji Umarun Kwabo, a known APC chieftain in Sokoto along with Barrister Inuwa Abdulkadir, the APC National Vice Chairman (Northwest), also from Sokoto, at a campaign rally organised by Governor Tambuwal in Birnin Kebbi recently, are pointers to the fact that they may be working for the PDP, as moles in the Sokoto APC family.

With this scenario, it will require the sagacity and acumen of the former governor-turned godfather to skillfully manage the crisis that may be thrown up by the party’s primary.

  • 2019: Ekiti APC gets consensus Assembly candidates

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State is set for the House of Assembly election on March 2 with consensus candidates.

Ekiti APC leaders and members have adopted the candidates by consensus to fly the party’s flag in the Assembly poll.

A party leader, who spoke in confidence, said the party’s constitution allows for consensus candidates.

The Assembly’s flag bearers were adopted on the basis of their loyalty to the party, pedigree, experience, gender and religious balancing as well as political factors of their constituencies.

The party leader said: “The adoption of Assembly candidates by Ekiti APC is aimed at ensuring that loyal party members make it to House of Assembly and others interested but who are not lucky are not allowed to waste time, money, resources and energy.”

Only two of the 26 candidates adopted by Ekiti APC have legislative experience.

They are: former Majority Leader Funminiyi Afuye (Ikere 1) and the present Minority Leader Gboyega Aribisogan (Ikole 1).

Afuye also served as Commissioner for Information and Inter-Government Affairs and Integration.

Four of the candidates, who are women, are: former Commissioner for Labour and Human Capital Development Mrs. Bunmi Adelugba (Emure); former Special Assistant on Media to the Deputy Governor Mrs. Yemisi Ayokunle (Ekiti Southwest 1); former Special Assistant to the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Kemi Balogun (Ado 2) and former Personal Assistant to the Deputy Governor Princess Teju Okuyiga (Gbonyin).

Also adopted as consensus candidates are: former Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Research and Documentation Mr. Hakeem Jamiu (Irepodun/Ifelodun 2); former Permanent Secretary, Government House and Protocol Mr. Akin Oso (Ido/Osi 2); former Chairman, Ekiti East Local Government Area Mr. Lateef Akanle (Ekiti East 2) and former Caretaker Chairman, Ekiti West Local Government Area Mr. Tajudeen Akingbolu (Ekiti West 1).

Others are: Mr. Oluwatoyin Lucas (Ado 1), Mr. Babatunde Lawrence (Ikere 2), Mr. Reuben Awoyemi (Oye 1) Mr. Yemi Osuntuyi (Oye 2), Mr. Adeoye Aribasoye (Ikole 2), Mr. Abiodun Fawekun (Ido/Osi 1) and Mr. Adejuwa Adegbuyi (Ekiti East 2).

The rest are: Mr. Johnson Adeoye (Ekiti West 2), Mr. Olatunji (Ekiti Southwest 2), Mr. Adeyemi Ajibade (Moba 1), Mr. Michael Arubu (Moba 2), Mr. Dele Ajayi (Ise/Orun), Mr. Tope Ogunleye (Ilejemeje), Mr. Ademola Ojo (Ijero) and Mr. Femi Akindele (Irepodun/Ifelodun 2).

The APC House of Assembly primary, where the candidates will be formally affirmed by party’s delegates, will hold on October 2.

The Assembly election will be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nationwide on March 2, next year.

  • 2019: Tambuwal appoints Ikechukwu as spokesperson

Sokoto State Governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant Aminu Tambuwal yesterday appointed Dr. Okey Ikechukwu as the spokesperson and head of Media and Strategic Communications for his 2019 presidential campaign.

Ikechukwu is charged with overseeing media contents and output related to the Tambuwal Presidential Project as well as being its official media face and voice.

The philosopher and public communications expert with rich and wide experience in youth mentoring, political campaigns and media management is to oversee every aspect of the campaign that would impact on the profile, general perception and Tambuwal’s branding as a presidential candidate.

Ikechukwu is an experienced public and security communications expert, leadership and governance consultant, public speaker, trainer and life coach.

He has held senior positions in the public and private sectors at the highest levels, led foreign delegations on behalf of the Federal Government, held board positions and chaired government’s reform committees and other initiatives.

He was, at various times, lecturer, Department of Philosophy, University of Lagos, Chairman Editorial Board and Editorial Page Editor of The Comet Newspapers, member, and later Acting Chairman, Editorial Board and Editorial Page Editor of The Guardian.

He was also a member of Daily Trust Newspapers Editorial Board and Chief of Staff/Special Assistant to Minister of Information and National Orientation.

  • 2019: We’ll support whoever emerges PDP candidate, says Bafarawa

PRESIDENTIAL aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have resolved to back whoever clinched the  ticket amongst them at party’s National Convention slated for Port Harcourt, Rivers State, one of the aspirants, Attahiru Bafarawa, has said.

The former Sokoto governor said the aspirants were resolute in their resolve to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. He spoke in Bauchi.

He told reporters yesterday: “Two aspirants come from Sokoto my home state, the present Governor, Aminu Tambuwal and me, Attahiru Bafarawa.

“That is not a problem at all because we the aspirants pledged that whoever emerged the candidate, we will all support him as our presidential candidate.”

Bafarawa said what the aspirants wanted was to “rescue Nigeria from All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I am a democrat and therefore ready to support any aspirant who emerges as the party’s flag-bearer in order to move the country forward.

“We all, however, need to be screened before the final decision on the party’s candidate is taken. I am not into politics to make money but to serve and I remain the best among the aspirants with 8 years’ experience as Governor of Sokoto State.”

  • ‘No consensus resolution on APC guber candidate in Sokoto’

A contrary stand came to bare against alleged resolution by the Sokoto state Chapter of the All Progressives Congress(APC) adoption of a consensus formular, emerged from Wafee Ahmadu Suka, Special Assistant on Media to Hon. Farouk Malami Yabo, a leading aspirant for the state governorship seat on the party’s platform saying “there is no consensus for any governorship aspirant to emerge as candidate of the party in the state.”

Accordingly, Suka said ” Farouk ‎Malami Yabo is still a gubernatorial aspirant on the party’s platform.”

With the recent developments, it seems the party in the state has a handful of issues to resolve internally to avoid imminent consequence before the 2019 poll.

According to the Media Aide “our attention has been drawn to the message contained in the publication which seems to suggest that the leader of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in Sokoto state, His Excellency, Senator ‎Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has handpicked Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto among other aspirants as the sole candidate of APC for 2019 governorship election in the state.”

Suka, however, noted in the statement that” Malam Bashir ‎Gidan Kanawa is a respected Islamic cleric in the state who is neither the spokesman of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko nor the Media Assistant to Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, the Deputy Governor of Sokoto state. He is rather an enthusiastic facebook commentator with no political reliability for his followers.

” I wish ‎to against this background, point out to the good people of Sokoto state particularly teeming members and supporters of APC, that the party has not negotiated anything that will jeopardise the lawful aspirations of other aspirants.

    ” All aspirants are equal
and wish to inform members of our great party that Hon. Farouk Malami Yabo MFR is still a gubernatorial aspirant and he respects the constitutional rights of other aspirants. Also, his respect and loyalty to his mentor, Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko remain unshaken”, the statement ‎concluded.

  • 2019: Akwa Ibom Christian youths endorse Buhari, Ekere

Akwa Ibom Christian youths under the aegis of Christian Youths Leaders Assembly on Saturday endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari and Mr Nsima Ekere, the Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), for the 2019 presidential and governorship elections.

The duo was endorsed and presented with symbolic keys to State House, Abuja, and Government House, Uyo, during a solemn assembly held at Uyo Township Stadium and attended by members of the organization drawn from 329 wards and 2,273 villages in the state.

Accepting the endorsement, President Buhari, represented by his Senior Special Assistant on National Assembly (Senate) Matters, Senator Ita Enang, appreciated the Christian youths for his endorsement and that of Mr Ekere and urged them to take advantage of the Not-Too-Young-To-Run bill, which he recently signed into law, to participate more actively in politics.

He said his government was addressing the security challenges in the country which have wrongly been given religious colouration, assuring that he will not do anything to make one religion look superior to the other.

President Buhari said he was adopting all proper measures to free Leah Sharibu, the Christian girl still in captivity by Boko Haram terrorist group.

In his speech, Mr Ekere commended the Christian youths for choosing a different path from some Christian leaders in the state who have been going round preaching hate.

“Today, you have redeemed Christianity. Before I came here, I heard all sorts of stories about Christian leaders turning themselves into a political organization and going from church to church, preaching hate. Christianity teaches us that we should love one another. I think it is not Christianity for a father to choose a child over another. The Spirit of God will go with us and He will be our enabler, our strength,” he said.
