  • 2019: ‘Why Nigerians ‘ll vote for Buhari’

A former Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Femi Bamisile, has called on Nigerians to vote massively for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Bamisile, an APC House of Representatives candidate for the Ekiti South Federal Constituency II in the 2019 general elections, told journalists at Omuo-Ekiti that it was insulting for the PDP to wish to return to power.

He said: “It is insulting and embarrassing for a party like the PDP to come around again  to promise to reposition the country it had earlier destroyed through bad leadership.

“There is no doubt that the coming general elections would also be another game of integrity and performance test, and the question will now be to compare a four-year term of the APC to a16-year term of the PDP in Nigeria.

“President Buhari had in the last three and years laid a solid structure for economic recovery and development with infrastructure in all the six geo-political zones”.

Bamisile said: “The difference is clear and axiomatic. The country will not fold arms and watch  bad people to bring back destructive tendencies of the past into the current reformation strides of President Buhari.”

  • 2019: We will never tolerate any breach of the law, INEC warns

As the Independent National Electoral Commission wind up activities on the submission and withdrawal of candidates for the 2019 general polls, the commission has warned that it would not tolerate any breach of the timelines provided for in the timetable for the elections.

The warning is coming at the heel of the closing date for the substitution of candidates for the governorship, states Assembly and council polls.

Political parties have till midnight today 1st December 2018 for any substitution or withdrawal of candidates ahead of the 2nd March, 2019 states elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu who disclosed this yesterday in Abuja noted that the commission has religiously followed the timelines and has so far executed seven of its fourteen scheduled activities.

He said: “We did not, and will never, tolerate any breach of the strict timelines provided for in the timetable for the elections.

“You would recall that on 9th January 2018, the Commission released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2019 General Elections. For the first time in our history, the date for General Election was announced over a year in advance.

More specifically, the timetable lists fourteen (14) step-by-step constitutional and other legal and other statutory activities required of the Commission ahead of the elections beginning with the formal Publication of Notice and ending with the election day.

So far, INEC has successfully implemented seven (7) out of the fourteen (14) activities strictly on schedule, including the conduct of party primaries for all elections and the processes of nomination of candidates.”

  • 2019: PDP, APC trade words over debate, falsehood

THE People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to face its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in a public debate ahead of the 2019 presidential election.

The main opposition party has consistently accused the President of avoiding a one-on-one live debate with Atiku, to discuss critical sectors of the economy and national life.

But, APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary Yekini Nabena yesterday accused the PDP presidential candidate of trying to mortgage key national assets to raise funds for his campaign for the presidential seat.

In a statement yesterday by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said the President has been afraid of engaging Atiku in debates organised by independent bodies.

The PDP said: “Nigerians are aware that President Buhari has been mortally afraid of facing our candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in a general debate organised by independent bodies.

“For this, the PDP grants him the liberty to choose a venue, date and time convenient for him to face our candidate before a neutral panel.

“President Buhari must face Atiku Abubakar in person, as Nigerians are not ready to accept any representation, whosoever, from him.

“If, as a Commander-In-Chief, Mr. President cannot face a political debate, how then can he vigorously engage international competitors?”

Stating that the country has been under peril in the last three and half years, the main opposition party charged President Buhari to be ready to avail Nigerians of his sectoral performance scorecards.

Describing the administration as a failure, the party similarly asked the President to present his future blueprint, if any, to enable the electorate weigh him alongside the PDP candidate.

“Nigerians await President Buhari to answer for the humongous corruption in his administration; why he has failed to fulfill any of his 2015 campaign promises and why he cannot show any key development project he initiated and completed in his three and half years in office.

The PDP also accused President Buhari of neglecting Nigerian troops fighting the Boko Haram insurgents in the Northeast, saying the President has reneged on his promise to “lead the fight from the front”.

Nabena also told the former vice president and his party to be aware of the fact that that electoral victories were not won through falsehood on the internet, but by valid votes of the electorate who are aware of who ruined the country and who is clearing the rot.

In a statement in Abuja, Nabena said it was already public knowledge that the recent meeting between Atiku and key PDP stakeholders was to raise campaign funds from foreign financiers for his campaign with a promise to sell Nigeria’s key national assets when he becomes President.

Asking anti-corruption agencies in the country to investigate the allegations, he said it is already common public knowledge that PDP governors have refused to contribute money to fund the presidential campaign.

The statement reads: “From silly conspiracies on the shape of the President’s ear, a ludicrous allegation of a presidential body double named Jubrin from Sudan, tales on the #NextLevelNigeria campaign and the rested certificate issue, Nigerians have been entertained by the comical displays of the PDP.

“Backed by their discredited cyber-thugs, the PDP in its desperate bid to remain in public reckoning continues to expose itself as a joke before Nigerians.

“The PDP should know by now that elections are not won through falsehood on the internet, but by valid votes of the electorate who are aware of who ruined the country and who is clearing the rot.

“It is now clear that we have no credible opposition political party, but a gang of selfish and mercantile politicians that will do anything to return to elective office.”

  • 2019: Southwest may lose out as Southsouth lobbies PDP, Atiku for SGF slot

Southsouth is lobbying for Secretary to the Government of the Federation( SGF) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  and its candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

With the development, the Southwest, which is demanding the SGF’s seat, may lose out if PDP and Atiku bow to the Southsouth pressure.

Atiku has promised to concede the position to the Southwest as re-echoed recently by ex-Governor Gbenga Daniel, who was the Director-General of the now disbanded Atiku Campaign Organisation.

Some Southsouth leaders and ex-militant leaders in the Niger Delta are behind the lobbying.

They believe no other post could assuage their marginalisation than the SGF slot, The Nation learnt.

The leaders, especially the former Niger Delta warlords, are said to be insisting that they will not play second fiddle if PDP returns to power in 2019.

Their position is said to be the outcome of a recent meeting between some South-South opinion leaders and ex-militant coordinators.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “We have a fresh challenge at hand because the Southsouth wants the SGF slot in a move which may alter pre-primaries negotiation with the Southwest.

“This demand from the Southsouth is part of the intrigues surrounding the ongoing horse-trading in PDP. Every geopolitical zone is interested in what PDP and Atiku will offer it.

“So far, neither the PDP nor Atiku has been forthcoming on the positions to concede to the South-South.

“What the South-South leaders are saying is that they will not wait till after the election before knowing PDP’s and Atiku’s plans for their zone. And it is more complex because ex-militant leaders are collaborating with respected leaders from the Niger Delta in this latest agitation.”

Atiku’s camp,  however, said it is too early to jostle for positions when a big battle is ahead.

One of Atiku’s  strategists, Mr. Phrank Shuaibu, said:  “The party has already done its zoning and that was why it’s presidential candidate came from the north. The candidate does not intend to alter the decision of the party unless the party decides otherwise.

“We regard these remarks as permissible conjectures, allowable agitations or gambits that can be used for negotiations, particularly now that it is becoming obvious by the day that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the PDP is a clear favourite to win the 2019 presidential election.

“However, the truth of the matter remains that it is still early in the day  to firmly  allocate certain sensitive positions at the national level when the real battle ahead is to defeat and dismiss President Muhammadu Buhari and his APC Government at the centre.

“The discussions on the issue of power sharing and ethnic balancing are an evolving conversation and negotiation. Nothing is static or written in gold or even cast in stone.

“ Realistically, it is the party leadership that will have the final say on such matters and discussions are ongoing.”

  • 2019: SGF urges APC members to bury grievances for better outing

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Mr Boss Mustapha, has called on All Progressives Congress (APC) members to bury their differences and work for the success of the party in the 2019 general elections.

Mustapha made the appeal at the end of the two days APC North East Zonal meeting in Bauchi on Sunday.

He said grievance is a enemy of progress that does not allow achievements and development within the party and the nation.

“We have to work towards successful outing in forthcoming general election, so we have to forgive and forget,”he said.

The SGF noted that the reconciliation committee set up by the national body of the APC would be the best solution to solve all the crisis bedeviling the party.

Represented by the Director General, National Orientation Agency (NOA) Dr Garba Abare, he said the setting up of the committee came at a right time when the 2019 general elections is approaching.

Mustapha underscored the need for all members of the party to leave their differences and unite under one umbrella for the success of APC in the elections.

Earlier, Gov. Muhammad Abubakar, had earlier said the meeting would go a long way towards tackling its internal problems and called on those that have lost during the recent primary elections to cooperate and work in close collaboration with others for the growth and development of their various states.

Abubakar therefore called on all people of the the North East and the entire nation to do their best to ensure the success of President Muhammadu Buhari and APC in the 2019 general elections.

The APC North East Zonal Vice Chairman, Mr Mustapha Salisu, described the meeting as an avenue that would enable all members of the party to share ideas on how to win the 2019 general elections.

In his remarks, Gov. Kashim Shetima of Borno, expressed optimism that the entire people of the North East and other States of the Federation would vote for APC considering the number of developmental  projects executed by the APC administration across the country. (NAN)

  • 2019: STORMY STATES brace up for governorship campaigns (1)

WITH the ban on electoral campaigns for the governorship elections scheduled for March 2 next year set to be lifted tomorrow, there is palpable anxiety in many states over the tone the campaigns may likely take, based on antecedents and the circumstances surrounding the emergence of the candidates in the affected states. Numbered among such states are Ogun, Adamawa, Sokoto, Kwara, Zamfara, Kaduna, Rivers, Benue and Imo, reports Raymond Mordi, Abdulgafar Alabelewe, Ernest Nwokolo, Rosemary Nwisi, Uja Emmanuel, Adekunle Jimoh and From Okodili Ndidi, Owerri Sokoto: It’s Tambuwal versus Wamakko THE campaign for next year’s governorship election in Sokoto State is expected to be stormy. The exercise, which kicks-off tomorrow, is likely to be dominated by two major parties: the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). It would be a battle of supremacy between Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who would be the arrowhead for the PDP campaign, and his predecessor, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko. The confirmation of Tambuwal as the candidate of the PDP raised the stakes in the contest, because it means a direct confrontation between the governor and his predecessor. The former governor was instrumental in Tambuwal’s emergence as governor on the platform of APC four years ago after he had served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Wamakko, who is the leader of the APC in the state, parted ways with his former protégé when the latter returned to the PDP to pursue his presidential ambition. Tambuwal’s decision to leave the APC, which hitherto controlled the state politically at all levels, meant that he was ready to sink or swim if the gamble failed. Manir Muhammad Dan’iya had emerged victorious at the PDP primary and subsequently, his name was submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the PDP candidate. But after the presidential primary, the party took advantage of the substitution window provided by the commission to field Tambuwal for obvious reasons: as the incumbent governor, he appears to be the strongest candidate that can be presented by the party. So, Tambuwal will square up with his deputy, Ahmed Aliyu, who picked the APC ticket, following the party’s recent governorship primary. Aliyu’s emergence did not come as a surprise, considering his close relationship with Senator Wamakko.

Observers say the Tambuwal camp was happy with the emergence of Aliyu, because Faruk Malami Yabo would have been far more difficult for the PDP to contend with in the general election. Yabo had previously served as a commissioner in two ministries, namely finance and local government, during the eight-year tenure of Wamakko. With Tambuwal’s defection to the PDP, the hitherto solid ranks of the APC in the state have been somewhat broken. For instance, a pressure group within the party called “Buhari Sak”, which has the mandate to protect the interests of President Muhammadu Buhari and has had close links with the governor, is reportedly in a dilemma on whether to support Aliyu or Tambuwal in the governorship contest. For instance, reports say Squadron Leader Aminu Bala Sokoto (rtd) and some members of the group have chosen to support Aliyu while the likes of Prof. Lawal Bashar and Dahiru Yabo, a former commissioner, remain aggrieved. While Dahiru has left the APC and joined the PDP, Bashar is reportedly considering his next option; a development that may not augur well for the APC in Sokoto, considering the influence the aggrieved politicians wield. Tambuwal’s strength is the incumbency factor.

But this will be factored around how he had used the office of the governor in the last three and a half years in meeting the yearnings and aspirations of the people. While he has succeeded in putting down some infrastructure, the general feeling is that he ought to have done more. One of the factors that helped Tambuwal to win almost four years ago was the Buhari candidacy and the fact that the people of Sokoto wanted to go in the same direction with the other northern states. Now that Tambuwal has returned to the PDP and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has come into the mix as the party’s presidential candidate, the two major parties are in for a tough electoral battle in the Northwest state. The governor has a task on his hands, to convince the electorate to go along with him by voting for the PDP rather than the APC, at the governorship and other elections. A source familiar with terrain said the expectation was very high when he came in almost four years ago and that he does not appear to have satisfied the yearnings of those who voted him into power. The major complain against him is that he is not on the same page with the common man on the streets. They say he is not accessible like other governors before him and that his policies are too elitist. Besides, there is also the disaffection on the streets, because of the perception that Tambuwal stays outside the state most of the time.

Tambuwal, however, has the backing of many stakeholders, including former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa, who are not happy with what they describe as Wamakko’s dictatorial tendencies. On the other hand, Aliyu’s greatest strength is the backing he has from Senator Wamakko who to date is considered the most influential politician in the state. For that reason, many people believe Wamakko’s endorsement will work for the APC. The former governor is perceived as a strong grassroots mobiliser. Observers say during his tenure as governor, his house is always filled with people waiting to see him at each point in time and that he gives freely to the people and they appreciate him. Secondly, Aliyu’s grassroots support after serving as commissioner for eight years is expected to play a key role in attracting votes for him. Besides, the fact that Faruk Yabo who lost out in the primary has elected to remain in the APC is a factor that will bolster APC’s chances. Peep into Ogun APC, PDP as governorship campaign begins THE die is cast for the governorship contest once again in Ogun State with the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) opening the door for electioneering campaign by candidates and political parties.

But while the fringe political parties appear set for the race to produce a successor to Governor Ibikunle Amosun, the same cannot be said of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Fringe parties like Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP), Alliance for Democracy (AD), YES Party and the resurgent African Democratic Congress (ADC) have already produced their governorship candidates after their seamless primaries. In fact, their feet are already on the campaign throttle in readiness for the political battle ahead while the APC and the PDP are yet to get their bearings right following the bickering that arose from the choice of candidates during the primaries.

The foregoing situation is already creating confusion and disillusionment among party members and supporters, particularly in the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) where the national body of the party reckoned House of Representatives member, Ladi Adebutu, as its governorship candidate while INEC accepted Adeleke Shittu as the PDP candidate in the state. Shittu’s name was submitted by the Bayo Dayo faction loyal to Senator Buruji Kashamu, but Shittu’s name has been substituted with that of Kashamu; a pointer to the political calculation that the billionaire hotelier and major financier of PDP since 2011 is in the race for the governorship seat. The faction loyal to Kashamu had secured an order from a Federal High Court sitting in Abeokuta, INEC and the Uche Secondus-led National leadership of PDP to accept and process the list of candidates and delegates submitted to them by the Engr. Adebayo Dayo-led Ogun State Executive Committee of the PDP for the purpose of the 2019 general election. In what is seen as obedience to the court order, INEC wrote to the national body of the PDP, intimating it of her readiness to honour the list of candidates that emerged from the Bayo Dayo faction and which were submitted to the Commission. In electing to obey the court order, INEC reminded the PDP leadership that a Federal High court sitting in Abeokuta had on October 2, 2018 in suit number FHC/ABJ/CFS/636/2016 initiated by Engr. Bayo Dayo (state chairman) and 8 others while INEC and three others were the respondents. And there is no where the disharmony the suit has engendered within the party is felt more than in its campaign, which has continued to portray the party as a house divided as was the case in previous elections it participated in.

The implication of the court order and INEC’s latest position is that the fate of Hon. Ladi Adebutu who emerged from the primary conducted for the Sikirulai Ogundeleled faction of PDP hangs in the balance. Although both camps are now in court over who is the authentic candidate, Ladi Adebutu still parades himself as the party’s candidate, promising to deliver the state to the PDP and enthrone quality governance for the people even as rumour is rife that he has a Plan B, which is to run on the ticket of another political party if his ambition to contest on the platform of PDP does not materialise. But the House of Representatives member representing Remo North, Ikenne and Sagamu Federal Constituency has remained unrelenting in assuring his supporters that he would not be distracted by those seeking to use the courts to stall his political progress and create uncertainty within the party. By his reckoning, the litany of litigations from the faction loyal to Senator Kashamu are only diversionary but would not endure, anchoring his confidence on the legitimacy of the Sikirulai Ogundele-led executive and the outcome of the primary duly conducted by the committee from PDP. He has also been holding political gatherings in parts of the state undaunted, and in one of such gatherings during the week in Ibafo area of the state, he advised party members and supporters to remain focused and determined as they approach the 2019 general elections. He submitted that the dissidents now masquerading as genuine party members and causing a lot of distractions within the party, would be flushed out as soon as possible. Also, PDP’s national legal adviser, Emmanuel Enoidem, allayed the fear of teeming members in the state over the legitimacy of the governorship candidacy of Adebutu. Enoidem was quoted by Dayo Rufai, Associate Head, Media Team, Ladi Adebutu Democratic Organisation, as declaring during the week that any name recognised by INEC other than the one approved by the national leadership of the party is not valid. “I came with a very special message from our National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, that In Ogun State, there is only one PDP that is recognised, and that’s the PDP that presented Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu as the governorship candidate of PDP in Ogun State.

Read also: ‘Next Level’ logo controversy: PDP is looking at the book’s cover instead of the content

Ladi Adebutu is our recognised candidate in Ogun State,” Enoidem said. With restriction on electioneering campaign lifted, it is now left to be seen how one party with two disagreeable candidates will storm Ogun cities, towns and villages on separate campaign trains to solicit votes from the electorate. For the All Progressives Congress (APC), its candidate is already settled in Prince Dapo Abiodun who is the product of a governorship primary conducted by the Muhammad Ndabawa-led electoral committee sent to Ogun State by the National Working Committee(NWC) of the All Progressives Congress(APC) last October 3. But that has left the party haemoragging with many seeking shelter in fringe political parties. Abiodun has won the ticket, but the task before him is how to win the party’s peace required for a successful governorship contest in a sophisticated state like Ogun. Governor Ibikunle Amosun, who lost the chance to launder all his solely appointed 40 candidates, including his right hand man, Abdukabir Adekunle Akinlade, a candidates on the platform of APC, are all smarting. Since emergence of Abiodun and Akinlade as separate candidates for one APC, and with alleged moves by Amosun to herd his supporters to another political party to pursue their ambition for elective offices in 2019, it has been all confusion and uncertainty in the minds of the people regarding the likely fate of APC. Amosun, who many have continued to accuse of plunging the party into the current crisis by allegedly singlehandedly picking Akinlade in a manner that shut out other contestants, as at two weeks ago maintained that his man was the governorship candidate of the party, who would succeed him in 2019.

Hitherto driven by the assumption that he built the party in the state while others are ‘profiteers’ seeking to reap from where they had sowed nothing, Amosun had insisted on having his way with Akinlade’s candidature until Abiodun entered the ring and believably routed the governor and checked what many party members considered as the incumbent’s inclination to corner everything for himself. Prior to Abiodun’s incursion, Senator Olamilekan Adeola, who had wanted to contest for the governorship seat from Ogun West on the platform of APC was bullied and shooed out of the state, allegedly by the governor after he had also used many innuendoes to qualify the senator representing Lagos West. Now, analysts are saying the palpably cornered Amosun had kept flying the kite that his supporters may toe the path of his predecessor, Gbenga Daniel, who herded his people and anointed candidate, Prince Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, to the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) when PDP denied them the ticket in favour of General Tunji Olurin in 2011. But Chief Bode Mustapha has assured that the ‘war’ is over and advised all party members to come together and rally round Abiodun for the greater task ahead, which is winning the governorship election.

He said the oil magnate and real estate operator from Ogun East Senatorial District would carry everybody, including the governor’s camp, along in the race to ensure the victory of the party in Ogun. It was learnt that the Governor may have weighed the options of leaving the party with his supporters and concluded that pulling out of APC would not profit him as was the case with Daniel and his supporters. There is a flicker of light that APC is settling down quickly for the battle ahead as Prince Dapo Abiodun has appointed his campaign Director-General and other APC stalwarts, with those who contested the ticket with him making the list of his campaign team The campaign Committee is headed by a past Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Prince Segun Adesegun who was named Director-General. Hon. Iziaq Abiodun Akinlade, a former gubernatorial aspirant, is the Deputy Director General. Hon. Bimbo Ashiru and Prince Tella, who were governorship aspirants of the party, were also appointed as director of finance and assistant director of mobilization for Ogun West respectively.

  • 2019: We’re monitoring campaign closely, says INEC

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is closely monitoring the ongoing campaign by various political parties and candidates ahead of the 2019 general elections, it was learnt yeterday.

The campaign for the 2019 presidential election officially began on Sunday November 13, as provided for by the Electoral Act.

INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu yesterday at a meeting  with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from the 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), said the commission was happy with the trend of the campaign, which, he noted, has been on policies rather than personalities.

He hoped that the trend would continue that way.

Yakubu said: “The commission is committed to closely monitoring the campaigns pursuant to our statutory mandate and to ensure compliance with the extant laws and regulations. We are pleased that the focus in the last few days since the commencement of the campaigns has been on policies rather than personalities. We sincerely hope it remains this way.”

The INEC boss, who also used the opportunity to react to the Kwara State bye-election at the weekend, promised that the commission would arrest and prosecute those involved in the attack on its workers and destruction of electoral materials.

Yakubu added that the commission would work with security agencies to fish out the perpetrators.

He said: “On a sad note, the commission lost four members of staff in Kogi State and one in Edo State to road accidents last week. Similarly, two of our staff survived road accidents in Katsina State during the bye-election last weekend and one election duty staff suffered a head injury following attack by hoodlums, who destroyed election materials at a polling unit in Kwara State.

“We are deeply saddened by these incidents. While we pray for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and wish the injured a speedy recovery, we will work with the security agencies to ensure the arrest and prosecution of those involved in the attack on our staff and vandalisation of election materials.”

On the window for political parties to substitute their candidates ahead of the 2019 elections, Yakubu said: “For governorship and state Assembly elections, the submission of nomination forms closed on November 2, 2018, while the last day for substitution and withdrawal of candidates is December 1, 2018.”

He also reiterated that the Area Council elections in the FCT will hold on March 2, 2019, along with the governorship and state Assembly elections.

He stated that the list of candidates for elections will be published yesterday in its Federal Capital Territory office and also at the six Area Councils.

On the meeting with RECs, he said the meeting would provide opportunity for the electoral body to review the progress on collection of outstanding Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

  • 2019: 70% of my appointments ‘ll go to youths, women, says Atiku

PEOPLES Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate election Atiku Abubakar, said if elected, 70 per cent of his appointments would go to youths and women.

Abubakar said this on yesterday in Yola while addressing a group of youths who organised a solidarity rally to endorse his candidature.

Abubakar said 40 per cent of appointments would go to youths, while 30 percent would go to women.

“The remaining 30 per cent will be managed by the elderly,” he said.

While pleading with the youths to vote for PDP for better life, the former vice president noted that their votes were vital for his victory as they constituted 70 per cent of the nation’s voting population.

“This election is for you; youths and women as you made up 70 per cent of Nigerian population of voting age.

“As for me, I have achieved in life, but many of you have a long way to go; you have no house, no job. If you fail to vote PDP you will continue like that.

“On Election Day, go and vote, protect your votes and ensure your votes count,” he said.

  • 2019: IG warns policemen against partisan politics

*Idris urges CPs to tackle thuggery, intimidation, violence

INSPECTOR-General (IG) Ibrahim Idris has warned policemen against partisan politics, following the beginning of political activities ahead of the 2019 general elections.

He urged Police Commissioners (CPs) not to tolerate any form of political thuggery, intimidation, demonstration of violent conduct and other acts that could lead to political clashes.

The Police boss also directed CPs to arrest and immediately prosecute any party member or supporters in possession of firearms or dangerous weapons during political campaigns and rallies in their respective states.

Force spokesman Ag. DCP Jimoh Moshood stated this in Abuja yesterday while highlighting security arrangement for campaigns and rallies.

Moshood said: “Consequent on the release of the time table and schedule of activities for 2019 general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the commencement of campaign by political parties for the presidential and National Assembly elections, which has taken off on November 18, 2018 and governorship and state houses of assembly elections starting on December 1, 2018, the IGP Ibrahim Idris has directed the implementation of a robust and elaborate security arrangement and measures to ensure adequate security and safety for the electioneering campaigns and rallies throughout the country.

“The Inspector General of Police has equally warned all Commissioners of Police in all the state commands and the FCT and other senior officers that have one role or the other to play in the implementation of the security arrangement for the 2019 general elections not to engage in political partisanship or bias but to remain focus and provide security for all throughout the period.

“The Commissioners of Police in the 36 state commands and the FCT and their supervisory Assistant Inspectors General of Police in the  12 Zonal Commands have also been directed by the IGP to protect and safeguard all venues of campaigns, rallies and other INEC approved electioneering activities of all Political Parties throughout the Country from now on till the end of the stipulated campaign period for the 2019 General Elections.”

The Police also said it has conducted threat assessments, adding that adequate deployment has been made to flash points.

  • 2019: Igbo leaders’ endorsement of Atiku has no substance, says President

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the split within the Ohanaeze, Igbo socio-cultural group, over its reported endorsement of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, did not surprise him.

He made the remark while speaking at a meeting with a select group of South East leaders yesterday, at the State House, Abuja.

According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, President Buhari said that the moment the so-called resolution was announced, he got calls from well-meaning leaders from the region asking him to disregard it as it was without any substance.

He said: “From that moment, I knew that the resolution would not stand, and alas, there it was.”

President Buhari said his party, the All Progressives Congress, got it right from the very beginning that the major problems facing the country were mainly on security, corruption and economy.

He said: “We have done so much. Given the chance, we will do more.  Given every chance, we will tell Nigerians where we were in 2015 and what we have achieved up to now.

“We will not get tired of speaking about the golden opportunity Nigeria lost during 16 years of the PDP.  We earned money which we didn’t use.

“The state of infrastructure we inherited was terrible – no roads, the railway was killed. They lacked conscience because anybody with conscience will not do what they did.  We will report them to Nigerians.  Let anybody lead this country but not the PDP.  They were so reckless with the resources of the country.

“If you ruin the economy, send your children abroad to get education, won’t they come back?” he asked, adding: “I said it 30 years ago that this is the only country we have.  We must stay here and salvage it together.”
