  • 5,000 teachers learn from British Council

Over 5,000 teachers gathered for the Connecting Classroom Best-Practice Sharing Conference, organised by the British Council at the Eko Hotel and  Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos last week to learn how to pass on core skills to the current generation of learners.

The conference was inspired by the 2013/2014 Education for All Global Monitoring Report, which underscored the need for curricula to help young people learn foundation skills like literacy and numeracy in a way that enhances transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving and advocacy and conflict resolution so they can become responsible global citizens.

Connecting Classrooms is the British Council’s education programme designed to help young people develop the knowledge, skills and values to live and work in a globalised economy, and contribute responsibly locally and globally.

At the conference, the teachers learnt core skills teaching experiences from a United Kingdom (UK) perspective as well as the perspectives of some of the participants.

They learnt how to practically teach these skills within the current education curriculum.

British Council Director of Programmes Mrs. Louisa Waddingham said updating skills training in schools would better prepare young people for the dynamic world of work.

“Jobs are fast changing; there is globalisation; the kinds of jobs we do today are quite different from what we did say 20 years ago. We need to make sure young people are prepared for that and are able to cope with different challenges. Critical thinking means that they can analyse,” she said.

British Council’s Director of Schools Education and Society, Mohammed Ahmed, added that the formal education must close the skills gap needed by the labour market.

“For the British Council, it is about recognising the world that people, who are now in school are going to be faced with when they go into the job sector. Again, when you look at the research that the British Council has done in the last two years, which looked at the gap between what students learn in school and what employers require from them, there is a clear gap in terms of the skills that those employers are looking for and some of the gaps identified were about problem solving,” he said.

The conference also featured a panel discussion with policy makers in Nigeria’s education sector, including representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, Nigeria Education Research and Development Council (NERDC), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), National Commission of Colleges of Education (NCCE), Lagos State Ministry of Education, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), as well as practitioners on the relevance, practicality, adaptability and sustainability of these teaching and learning skills in the Nigerian education system.

One of the planned outcomes of the conference was how to promote further collaboration between the British Council and relevant organisations in the integration of the 21st Century learning skills in the Nigerian Curriculum.

The Connecting Classrooms programme has been in Nigeria since 2009 and has facilitated partnerships between over 200 schools locally and in the UK as well as other African countries.  Over 150,000 teachers have been trained through the programme.

  • The single life (5)

    Dear Reader,

This Week, I will be sharing with you some vital tips that will help you to live a glorious life as a single person. Some single persons find it difficult to fulfill their destinies because of these points I want to share with you today.

    Dealing with Sin Problem

Many single persons have problem with sin in their lives. This makes it difficult for them to fulfill their destinies in a grand style. The sin problem has an answer. The Bible says: For sin shall not have dominion over you: for you are not under the law, but under grace (Romans 6:14). The price for sins has already been paid for by Jesus Christ.

    Engaging your Will-Power

Will-power is a very strong determination to do something. The will is a God-given force able to determine your habits and choices. Also, your will is a force of deliverance and a force of liberty. You can stop that deadly habit of masturbation and fornication in your life by a will. It is a potent force in every mortal being. You can “will” to refuse defilement by sin. Legally, a will is a document that becomes operational, only after the death of the testator. You are dead in Christ (Colossians 3:3). Man is a free moral agent; he has the ability to make a will which is stronger than desire. Joseph exercised his will-power (Genesis 39:9). Daniel stood firm on the power of the will, not even a threat of death in the lion’s den could shake him (Daniel 1:8; 6:16-22).

    Stop the thoughts

Until you stop the thoughts, you cannot stop the act. If you think filthy thoughts, you cannot but live a filthy life. It is impossible to think impure and expect to live pure. Isaiah 55:7 says: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. This Scripture means that until an individual forsakes evil thoughts, he invariably will have evil ways. But my joy is that you can cast down every imagination or thought that is unrighteous. You can rebuke those evil thoughts once you sense them coming. Not just only that, fill your inner-man with the right things. Stuff your mind with God’s Word and anointed materials. Then your actions also will be right.  Remember, “Garbage in, garbage out” and I say, “Word in, Word out!”  It is time to take control of your thoughts and be in charge!

    Meditate on the Word

By the Word of God, you strip sin naked and send it away. Lay up the Word of God in your heart so you don’t sin against God. Psalm 119:11 says: Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee. You destroy sin by firing the Word contacted by revelation at it. The Word is the sword of the spirit; you can use it as an offensive and defensive weapon.

    The Blood of Jesus

The blood of Jesus purges and sanctifies us (Romans 5:8-10, Hebrews 9:12-14). When you are in a conflict with sin, plead the blood, it’s a stronghold (Zechariah 9:11-12). You can overcome sin via the instrumentality of the blood. Revelation 12:11 says:  And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb…..

    The name of Jesus

When you are in a conflict with sin, call on the name of Jesus and that evil thought or imagination will bow. Every knee bows to the name of Jesus (Philippians 2:10).

The help of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is our dependable helper in time of battle. The Word of God says:  For if you live after the flesh, you shall die: but if you through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, you shall live (Romans 8:13). By the help of the Holy Spirit, you mortify the deeds of the flesh. He is your superior helper, engage Him!

    Mind your Association

The company you keep can either make or mar you; it doesn’t leave you neutral. A wise man once said, “You will remain what you are today in five years time, except for the books you read and the company you keep.” The one who keeps company with wise men is the one who will be wise, but the companion of fools will not only be foolish but will, ultimately be destroyed. Walking with a foolish man is as bad as being foolish. One thing some Christians fail to understand is that one cannot flow together with every believer, simply because the person calls himself a believer. Some believers have wonderful titles (Apostles, pastors etc.) but are appallingly lacking in Christian character.

The story of Amnon and his subtle friend Jonadab is a good example of wrong association. The Word of God says: And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her.  But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother: and Jonadab was a very subtle man (2 Samuel 13:2). Amnon paid for it with his life. After his death, Jonadab, the same “friend” who gave him wrong counsel, was the one who announced his death.

It is impossible to amount to anything outside the company you keep. You cannot expect to live a better life than your companions. The Word of God says: Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us (2 Thessalonians 3:6).

If you want to be born again, please say this simple prayer of faith with me: “Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the living God. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.”

If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, congratulations, you are born again! You are now a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. • How to improve on your marriage (5)

    Dear Reader,

I strongly believe you enjoyed the Christmas celebration. I feel so delighted to say to you: Happy New Year in advance! Sounds of joy shall not cease from your habitation in Jesus’ name.

I started this teaching by notifying you that marriage is a miracle. Also, I unveiled to you marriage covenant responsibilities. I also taught on beware of divorce. Today, as 2016 gradually rolls by and never to be observed again, I wish for you to Make Right the Wrongs of your Marriage Covenant!

Time never corrects an error! An error yesterday remains an error today, except it is corrected. You can make a wrong, right!  Many people, today, pass through a lot of difficulties in their marriage because of a wrong foundation in their marriage. I have seen women being driven out of their homes at the death of their husbands, because their union was “illegal”. The woman had no voice, because she had no legal backing. Wisdom is profitable to direct (Ecclesiastes 10:10).

I remember a woman I counselled sometime ago. She had been going through tough times in her home, and was ready to call it quits. To top it up, she had no child. When I interviewed her closely, I discovered that there were a lot of loopholes in her marriage. Her dowry was not paid, and there was nothing legally binding herself and the man together, as husband and wife. No court wedding, no church wedding; both of them just started living together!

I counselled her to ensure that the dowry was paid, legal papers signed in the court of law, and that their union be blessed by a minister of the gospel. The next time I saw her, she was over-joyous and full of testimonies. To the glory of God, today all is well with that marriage.  To crown it all, she was expecting a baby as at that time!

If the foundation of your marriage is not built on instructions from the Word of God, there is no way you will have a fulfilled family life.  It is important, therefore, that you go and pay the dowry, if it has not been paid. This is scriptural!

Furthermore, parental blessing is very important in a marriage covenant, as read in Genesis 24:58-60. It is something you cannot rule out. There is something about the blessings your parents pronounce on you that makes it stick on you until all their good wishes are established in your life. From the account in the Scripture quoted above, Abraham’s servant did not just grab Rebekah and disappear with her. No! Rather, due procedures were properly followed, and the blessings of her parents became a practical reality in her life.

It is also very important in your marriage covenant to acknowledge the place of a holy Christian wedding. The Word of God says: And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man (Genesis 2:22). In this verse of Scripture, we see God’s practical involvement in the institution of marriage. He gave Eve out to Adam.  It is, therefore, unsafe for you to go into marriage without God. This will definitely attract the attacks of the devil. You shall not be a victim in Jesus’ name!

Are you reading this article and have been living together with your partner without the payment of dowry, or any formal engagement/ public Christian wedding? Or you have been living together for years and have even had children, without a proper marriage. This is not a holy union.

Instead of feeling or living in condemnation, you need to make things right, today, by paying the dowry. Go and legalise your union. A proper legal documentation of your union is that point of contact to remind God that you have fulfilled all righteousness concerning your marriage, and therefore, the enemy must not have access into your family. You can do this simply by going to the court for a court wedding.  Then look for a minister of the gospel to bless your union.

You need the grace of God to make every wrong, right in your marriage. That grace only is available to those who have acceptable Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. That is what it means to be born again. If you desire to become born again, please say this prayer: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the living God. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.

If you prayed this simple prayer, you are now a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

Congratulations! You are now born again! All-round rest and peace are guaranteed you, in Jesus’ Name. Call or write, and share your testimonies with me through contact@faithoyedepo.org; OR 07026385437 and 08141320204.

  • Fed Govt trains 5,000 graduates in Anambra

Over 5,000 graduates have been trained in Anambra State under the Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS).

Before the training in Awka, the state capital, about five groups of 50 graduates each had been trained, with additional five groups taking their turn next.

Speaking at Geo-Gold Hotels in Awka, the project Director, Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS), at career development and entrepreneurship skills said the federal government was trying its best in making sure that the youth are employed.

He was represented by Mr. Fola Jimoh, who said that the FG’s scheme had given hope to thousands of youths in the country.

Jimoh said, “The federal government is not ready to fail on this exercise; rather the President Muhammadu Buhari administration is doing everything possible to fight graduate unemployment.

The era of unemployment is over in this country with this (GIS) programme, but whatever stipend being owed to anybody will soon be paid by the government”.

Jimoh was in Anambra State with Mr. Johnson Iyiola, project implementation unit (GIS), Garba Shehu, Principal Officer Ministry of Finance and Jamey Yakubu of Nansel selzing-N-Miz International Limited for the programme.

He said the initial plan by the previous administration was to recruit 50,000 which according to him did not work until the present administration came in and raised the stake.

“However as long as thousands of graduates still remain unemployed, we will continue to improve the capacity of the scheme to absorb more applicants”

  • Borno uncovers 5,000 ghost workers

Five thousand ghost workers have been uncovered by the Borno State government, it was learnt yesterday.

Governor Kashim Shettima, who addressed a news conference yesterday, however said only 11,735 wokers verified, of 19,700 workers, will be paid two months’ salaries.

“We are paying 11,735 workers, who successfully completed their biometric verification, as part of our plans to sanitise the civil service and checkmate fraudulent acts,” Shettima explained.

He noted that the verification helped the government to save more than N1.3 billion monthly.

But Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Titus Abana called on the government to consider the hardship of the workers.

Mr. Abana appealed that those workers, who have not been verified, should also be paid, saying the peculiarity of Maiduguri in terms of security, made the exercise difficult for workers.

He noted that the government’s decision would compound their hardship, since many of them were displaced.

  • The Missing Government Papers (5)

Presently Aunt Deline asked: ‘What is this I am reading about the permanent secretary misplacing some papers?’

‘You know’, Inspector Gogo said, leaning forward confidentially, his hunger forgotten, ‘I have a theory about those papers, but I am interested in hearing yours.’

‘No, let’s hear yours first’, Aunt Deline insisted.

‘Ok. I think the permanent secretary forgot where he put the papers.’

‘The report says he said he kept them in his briefcase.’

‘He might have thought he did. It happens many times. Remember the case of the missing diamond brooch of Mrs. Tango? She swore she had kept it in her drawer but where did we eventually find it? In a case in her bathroom! Did she not confess that she remembered putting it there when she heard one of her servants coming into the room? People forget things.’

‘Granted, people forget things,’ Aunt Deline persisted. ‘Even I forget things. But let’s give credit to a man who says he still saw the envelope in the morning while at another meeting and he never touched it all through the day but occasionally checked on it and always saw it. I think your theory of a memory lapse cannot hold here. I rather think that I believe him.’

‘Believe him all you like; but I have seen enough of the lapses in human nature to put my faith in the staidness of any man. Have you forgotten the case of the civil servant who killed his girlfriend? Everyone swore he was an upstanding man but one lapse of judgment caused him to commit murder…’

‘We’re not talking murder here, just some missing papers. And I think I might know where the papers are,’ Aunt Deline replied.

    ‘You do?

‘Oh yes, from my reading of the newspaper report, I can plot you the exact spot where those papers are. However, I will not say where until I have visited the office and tested my little theory.’

‘Surely you can do that tomorrow. I will hold my theory till then.”Yes do; I don’t want your theory contaminating mine. I have found that the average policeman thinks linearly. In situations like this, you must think within the entire radius of the problem. As soon as the sun rises tomorrow, I will go and test out my theory.’

‘I can go with you. The permanent secretary has asked for my help on the matter. He got to know me through an old classmate, I guess. I can tell him I have come to survey the place myself and introduce you as my associate.’

Aunt Deline looked hesitant. ‘I would have liked to go on my own. But you can come along I guess.’ With that, they fell into talking about other things.

When the morrow dawned, I found myself breakfasting alone. Aunt Deline left home early and returned about two hours later, fuming.

‘Did you know that taking a taxi ride in this town is just like taking a ride through hell? Not only are they tiny for the six people they cram inside it, the drivers are very rude, impatient and lack the human connection. Sometimes I wonder, what is the point of their life? They would sooner lose their passenger’s life than lose their money.’

‘What happened, Aunt Deline? Where did you go? The Inspector came to look for you.’

She waved her hand dismissively at me. ‘Oh, never mind, you’ll hear about it soon enough. Where is breakfast?’

After I had presented her with her favourite pap and akara meal which I had bought from the woman downstairs who specialised in frying akara, she ate heartily. You would think she had never eaten before.

‘Mama Sikira sure makes the perfect akara, I tell you. If I happen to pass out, don’t go for sniffing salts. Just put one fist wrap of her akara under my nose. Believe it or not, my mouth will open.’

Immediately after breakfast, Aunt Deline disappeared again and did not reappear until evening. I occupied myself by studying. After all, my exams were approaching.

About half past seven, Inspector Gogo came down to our flat. Aunt Deline was not only back but had freshened up and had had supper. I had cooked some stew and white rice which I garnished with some fried slices of plantain we call dodo around here. I was proud of myself after watching my aunt smack her lips on the last slice of dodo. If I had to say so myself, I certainly had a nifty hand in the kitchen; obviously, I could not depend on my aunt to say it. Around here, you have to help yourself to everything, including praise.

The inspector had come along with the day’s paper, which he proceeded to read to himself, semi-aloud.

‘Even with a university education, the man still reads like a kindergarten cop.’ Aunt Deline’s remark lighted the spark as she came into the parlour.

‘It’s not everyone who had the privilege of a straight-line education  from nursery to primary to secondary to university. Some of us had to do farm work before we could do GCE privately to even be able to go to pivotal or sandwich to earn our degree,’ replied the inspector before he continued mouthing his reading.

‘Well, you don’t have to be so proud of your lengthy educational journey. The question is, has it helped you find the missing papers?’

‘No. You left me behind, remember? My theory has not changed though… What did you find?’

‘I said it, you need to go back to school and get your money back if you cannot solve a simple enough problem like some missing government papers.’ She made it sound like it was a problem that amateur detectives used for practice.

‘If I remember correctly, even the great detective, Sherlock Holmes, had some difficulty solving a similar case involving some missing government papers,’ replied the inspector.

‘Perhaps; but I’m not sure he will agree with you that he ‘had some difficulty’. To start with, he was dealing with a professional criminal class whose system was more advanced. In this case, we are dealing with a criminal whose interest in trade overrides everything, including loyalty. You must remember that where the Nigerian is concerned, money comes first.

‘So, I asked myself, who is likely to benefit more from these papers? First, the permanent secretary had taken them in order to use them, not sell them. That was motive enough, but in this case, he was the victim not the beneficiary. He also stood to gain but indirectly. So, clearly, he did not take the papers. The question is, who did, since no one else knew about the papers, and papers do not get up and walk away? Papers fly away, yes, but only if the window is opened, but that was not the case. According to the report, the man was had already left the office and was home, so presumably, his windows would have grills. All home windows in this country have metal grills.’

‘Someone could have concealed him or herself in the room without anyone observing…’

‘I thought of that too, and I must confess that was my main thought when I went to the office this morning to see things for myself.’

The inspector bristled. ‘Were you well received there? Were you able to take a good look at the place?’

‘Yes to both questions. How else can one arrive at the truth? You must see things for yourself. I ask you: can a doctor arrive at a true diagnosis of a disease without inspecting the patient? Every disease leaves a trail as plainly as a crime. It is then up to the doctor to follow the trail to catch the criminal.’

‘Now, you are talking like an academic — being simplistic. You think diseases are so easy to catch? If so, no one will be sick. Don’t you know that there are people on hospital beds whose doctors are as baffled about the nature of their illness as I am about many crimes? You are just a typical woman, jumping to conclusions!’

‘That’s where you’re wrong. There is nothing yet that has not yielded its true and explicit nature to the observant eye. The eye is the key. If you miss one step in your analysis, the data will deal falsely with you. You must pay close attention.’

  • Secrets to marital bliss (5)

DEAR Reader, A lot of times, people dream about a perfect home where joy, peace, abundance and fruitfulness abound. Such dreams are good, if you determine to do what is required to realize it. Just as physically you cannot own a home by mere wishing. If you plan on having a glorious family, stop wishing and prepare to play your part. You must accept responsibility for the building of your family. God’s Word says: Every house is built by some man… (Hebrews 3:4). This week, I will be teaching on Commitment.

Husband, wife, are you committed to your marriage, home and relationship? Many people have entered into marriage thinking they might as well give it a trial. After the first attraction dies and the work of making a happy marriage begins, they begin to wonder if they have not married the wrong person.

    Three fold-cord of commitment

    Commitment to God

When you commit yourself to Christ, Christ commits Himself to you. 2 Timothy 1:12 says: For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

A husband and wife, who are committed to the Lord Jesus Christ and to doing the will of God, are walking in the light (1 John 1:7). This brings great stability into marriage and family life.

Since it is God who instituted the family, it is only reasonable that He occupies a central part in your marriage and family life. God must be in the life of both parties. Marriage is an institution designed by God. So, it cannot be successful when God is ignored. After accepting Jesus Christ as your Saviuor, you have the love of God shed abroad in your heart and you can truly love others (Romans 5:5).

    Commitment To Your Spouse

The second strand in the three-fold cord of commitment is permanent commitment to your spouse. Men and women, our nation and churches desperately need strong families. Marriage is a lifetime commitment. When I speak of commitment, I am not referring to some form of passive past commitment that was based on hormones and emotions. Rather, I am referring to the daily exercise of love (1 Corinthians 13). I am referring to the husband taking the time to get to know his wife and communicating with her (1 Peter 3:7-10). I am talking about building the kind of a relationship together, so that you enjoy being together and after years of marriage, you are still ravished with her love.

A blissful marriage requires commitment to your spouse.  When you neglect this, no amount of prayer and fasting and ‘sleeping’ in church can prevent your home from falling apart.

    Commitment To Your Children

The final strand in the three-fold cord is a commitment to your children. As parents, you must be committed in training and providing for your children.

In conclusion, Commitment to God begins with Salvation. This comes by surrendering your life to Christ. You surrender by confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your Saviour and Lord.  If you are ready to be born again, please say this prayer: “Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the living God. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.” If you prayed this simple prayer, you are now a child of God.

  • ‘5,000 stipend is an insult to Nigerian youths’

The Commandant-General of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, Ambassador Dickson Akor has said the campaign promise of 5,000 to Nigerian youths by the All Progressive Congress, APC is an insult to Nigerian youths.

While commending President Muhammadu Buhari for jettisoning the idea, Akor canvassed for empowerment scheme for youths as well as legislative backing to ventures and ideas that will uplift the Nigerian youths.

The Peace corps bill which Akor said is one of various ideas will create 800,000 Nigerian youths with jobs when finally passed into law by the National Assembly.

Speaking on the bill which scaled through the second reading in the National Assembly last week, Akor said the bill sponsored by Senate leader, Senator Ali Ndume when passed seeks to empower, develop and provide alternative employment for the youths to facilitate peace, community services and other related matters.

Akor who spoke with newsmen saturday in Abuja on the bill said the Senate has referred the bill to the committee on Interior for further legislative actions including organizing public hearing.

“The bill when finally passed into law has the capacity to provide alternative employment for Nigerian youths, facilitate peace, community services and nation building.

“The bill will provide positive engagement of the youths with a view to pre-occupy them in ventures that would make them economically productive to themselves and larger society.

“Currently in Nigeria, we are investing a lot of energies and resources to contain the menace of insurgency, militancy, kidnapping, vandalism, armed robbery, political thuggery, drug trafficking, prostitution, suicide bombing, cattle rustling and a host of other social vices.

“These vices no doubt constitute social challenges that have retrogressive effects and implications on the economic development and security of the nation.

“This bill seeks to give statutory functions to the existing peace corps of Nigeria which currently has over 98,000 members with well structured network of branches in 34 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory and observing adequately all its stated functions, and achievement of no small measure for an NGO.”

The Nigerian Peace Corps was established 17 years ago alongside the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC).

The bill successfully scaled second reading after it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.

  • Civil servant in court for ‘defiling’ girl, 5

Civil servant in court for ‘defiling’ girl, 5

A 22-year-old man, Adekunle Taiwo was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court for allegedly defiling his neighbour’s five-year-old daughter.

The accused, a civil servant, who lives at Atobaje Street, Agege, is facing a charge of defilement.
